Here is another riddle, which I could not solve:

A well-circulated spanish 2 reales coin of Ferdinand VII, struck at the Madrid mint during 1824..

The coin seems perfectly legit, also the countermark does.

The question remains: Which authority has applied the VR initials on a spanish mainland coin of 1824?

Looking forward to any replies.

... or perhaps just obscure and unimportant?

It's a sloppy punch - I sort of doubt it's from any official/government issuing entity. It could be a rather non-ornate hacienda countermark (Cuba/PR/DR?)... maybe just the private mark of a merchant, metalsmith or similar out of peninsular Spain?

Also, given how heavily the host is worn, I would assume the mark dates from at least several decades after 1824.

RW - Yes. Unimportant. Notice the second letter how its double punched whereas the first letter is of a single punch. So not even of a double letter punch device and just singular local merchant type punches probably? less sophisticated than even a crude Hacienda type punch ...

Interesting, maybe not worth much, but definitely rare.

Rarity does not always translate into money.

I am quite sure, that the countermarks are old as I see, that much of the circulation also affected the counterstamped letters, which would suggest, that the coin was used as we see it today for many years, if not decades.
