The proof ones all come from San Francisco, so without a "S" mintmark, you won't have a proof (at least for coins made after 1968). And even then, SF made some regular coins up through the 70's.

The two Jefferson nickels commonly referred to as Matte Proofs were made in 1994 and 1997. They were both minted in Philadelphia. This is possibly a nickel from the 2006 uncirculated set which would explain the satin finish. There are two very important things to remember about proof coins. First; they are made on purpose not by accident. Second; the Denver Mint has never made a proof coin.

Thank you for the great information. I never considered the layer was removed by taco sauce, ketchup etc. Now I can add this to my bicentennial Quarter that has fire damage. Hey maybe someone's out there that collects obscure coins. I have a few quarters that look similar. Thanks again
