No proof nickels were made in Denver.

The proof ones all come from San Francisco, so without a "S" mintmark, you won't have a proof (at least for coins made after 1968). And even then, SF made some regular coins up through the 70's.

The two Jefferson nickels commonly referred to as Matte Proofs were made in 1994 and 1997. They were both minted in Philadelphia. This is possibly a nickel from the 2006 uncirculated set which would explain the satin finish.

There are two very important things to remember about proof coins. First; they are made on purpose not by accident. Second; the Denver Mint has never made a proof coin.

The surface was probably altered on your coin. Acid from soda, ketchup, taco sauce, vinegar or other things will remove the top layer of a coin, that in time will turn dull in appearance. Match proof cents were struck on the 1909-1916 years. They are not shiny like the proof we have today. More for collectors to save. You probably will never find these in circulation. Some left them in the cellophane holders an they turned unique colors.

Note the strong strike and the rims are sharp.

But the rim, the strike and detail is what to look for on these. But the chances of finding on in circulation would be very rare.

Thank you for the great information. I never considered the layer was removed by taco sauce, ketchup etc. Now I can add this to my bicentennial Quarter that has fire damage. Hey maybe someone's out there that collects obscure coins. I have a few quarters that look similar. Thanks again
