At first it looked like die wear, then the "G" in God sticks out along with the "Y" in Liberty, lets see what others have to say.

That looks pretty good to me, but like chrsb said, let's wait for the real experts to have their say.

It's easier explained with a picture:-) The notches are the parts of the letters as seen here. You actually see "notches" where the letters overlap. I hope this helps.

ALSO...When there is overlap of images and no major separation between the images, the up and down lines as seen on the I and N for example, would be called grooves. You also see grooves on the other letters, it's just more easily pointed out on the word IN. So when you hear about notches and grooves....this is what we mean. The grooves run up and down, following the shape of the letter and the notches are the little "cutouts" so to speak at the very top or bottom of a feature on the letters.

Thanks,
Bill

To compare now with the 1919 S cent, you can see lines caused by metal being moved but they are not grooves between the images. When you look at the G of GOD for example, on the 1919 S cent, as Chuck points out...no notches. If you really get familiar with the size and shapes of the lettering on the early Lincoln's you might also pick up on the fact the the TY of LIBERTY are not appearing as being wider than they would normally be. Added width would be indicative of having been struck by a doubled die.

The TY are the normal width but they have had metal scraped in a direction that as wear took place over the years looks like doubling. The normal width of the lettering and the doubled appearance is how you can determine that the 1919 S coin has Machine Doubling.

I hope this helps explain why the coin up top is not a Die variety but does show evidence of Machine Doubling.

Thanks,
Bill
