Ok then weigh it and check it with a magnet. And give the thread 24 hours for nss-52 to chime in.

Given the detail it should weigh 26.7 grams

Morgan is fake too. Has that "look" that Chinese counterfeits have. Sounds like your co-worker has been ordering fakes online and has recently gotten their shipment

Ask the seller to get coin authenticated. Spending $20 vs $2000 should have different due diligence. Both are FAKES!

Unfriend your friend.

I think you should consult CCF on every purchase because both you posted are fake and you would have wasted $$$

The Morgan is 100% fake. The obverse and reverse are indicative of a 1921 Morgan, not an 1885 Morgan. Bad Chinese fake copy. I agree I'd avoid any more deals with your coworker and maybe ask him to refund your $20. If he refuses to refund you I'd honestly would not deal with him ever again. If a person I knew ripped me off they'd be unfriended real quick

Get your money back on the Morgan dollar, it is a fake.
Don't buy the 1799 Dollar, it is a fake and a really bad one.

Does knowing it came from a storage locker make you think the coin is genuine? Or...does that make you think it might not be genuine? The vendors at flea markets (notorious for selling fakes) can rent and abandon storage lockers, too.

Even if your coworker said they got it out of a safe deposit box, or from an uncle's or grandfather's 50 year collection, from a coin show or even a coin dealer, I would still tell you -- the Morgan dollar is definitely not authentic.

On the Morgan being fake.
The lettering on for the work "STATES" jumps out to me as
being wrong.

And as posted above, the design of the arrow feathers were only
used on 1878 and 1921 Morgan's, so very wrong for a 1885.

I would suggest purchasing a scale to weigh coins and a good
magnet. Having them helps with basic check of coins like these.

Edit - There are some 1879 that have reverse of 1878 .. with this type arrow feather design.

So, I confronted the co worker today and expressed to him that the coin he is selling and the one he sold me was deemed fake. His reaction told me that he already knew this. NO shock whatsoever on his part. He even said "I must've sold all the good ones from the stack". Unreal and unfriended. Thanks everyone

I wouldn't just unfriend him. I would report him to the proper authorities. The $20 morgan wouldn't raise an eyebrow but selling fake early dollars for $2k will. I'm sure you're not his only victim and the FBI is cracking down on the large ticket counterfeits out here.

If he is knowingly selling fakes and essentially bragging about it, screw it I would report him to the proper authorities. It's scumbags like this that taint our beloved hobby and get away with ripping off honest people. MikeF makes a point small stuff won't get him in trouble it's when it reaches a certain $ amount when the authorities need to step in and stop this. He will probably pay a fine or possible jail time. I await to see what happens.

File a report with the FBI and give a copy to HR.
