I seem to be having some trouble with the self adhesive type 2 X 2's becoming unstuck. More than likely I am using too small a size for each coin but your input would be greatly appreciated. I'm just wondering how much space should be free around the outside of each coin once it is inserted into the holder. I'm currently concentrating on Aussie decimals so perhaps someone can tell me which sizes they use for the different decimal values.

G'day, the 2x2 are a great system for storage and display. There are a lot of horror stories about "self-adhesives" becoming "unadhesives" without warning, and valuable coins falling out ... usually on to a hard surface: Murphy's Law as it applies to numismatics, I guess. I use the the stapled 2x2. When selecting a 2x2, you ought to consider the thickness of the coin. The mylar (or whatever transparent plastic is used) can stretch a little, but I don't think that they're meant to be a tight fit. But, if the coin moves around, that's no good, either. For example, a sovereign is 22mm diameter, but it seems a little too tight in a 22.5mm 2x2, so I go to the next size: 25.0mm. I think you've got to try a bit of trial & error. Our Seppo friends don't understand when you ask about "diameter". Over there, the 2x2 are cut to match exactly each of their denominations, so they talk about "penny 2x2", or "dime 2x2", etc. Stapled 2x2 are a lot less expensive. But you need a "flat-clinch" stapler, rather than an ordinary stapler that you use at home or in an office. I found one for $8.90, in a local stationers, so that's no big deal. I think the best 2x2 are the ones with the little tab, that facilitates getting them out of the album. I don't live near any coin shops, so I buy my 2x2 by mail order. The trick is to get a batch that makes best use of an OzPost flat-rate envelope. Last time I bought, in 2006, the cheapest 2x2 were from a dealer in Perth. But the album pages were cheapest from Melbourne. Peter in Darwin

Lighthouse are the best I have used, they are thinner than others and seem to stick better
Trick is to remove the backing sticker and leave them exposed to air for say 10 minuites place in coin and really rub the cardboard surfaces together with your thumb.A phone book is a good surface to do this on.Once done put 2x2s into coin album sleeve this helps keep it stuck
I use the following sizes:
Size 25 for 2c 10c $2 Size 22.5 for 5c Size 30 for 20c Size 27.5 for $1 Size 35 for 50c

Yep, I agree with johnsopet, lighthouse brand are excellent. Renniks are always coming unstuck and are a pain. I think if your stretch the milar on the Renniks ones they may not tend to open as much. Lighthouse brand also have a "well" area around the coin with no sticky stuff to give some insulation from ever touching the coin. Whenever I buy 2x2's now it's always Lighthouse type.

Thanks Learjet I don't get much praise but glad you agree because the Lighthouse 2x2s have really proved to me to be the Rolls Royce of 2x2s That surrounding "well" you mentioned and thinner more flexible cardboard does seem to do the trick for permanent sticking. I have never been a fan of staple 2x2s. The Rennicks type are too thick but in Australia the distributor sells both brands and the costs are the same for both types. The lighthouse 2x2s can also be bought in bulk packs of 100 which saves bit of money and I buy them direct from sales@newcastlecoins.com.au and Shane is very switched on and great to deal with

I have used Renniks stickies and have found that sometimes the cardboard pops open but the milar? stayes sealed. Don't know if it was a bad batch or not? I had them sitting on my desk not in a folder/pocket thing. I'm sure there is a technical name for them? I use 35mm slide pockets archive quality and supper clear.

From a shortage of Lighthouse stock I have been forced to use some Renniks 2x2s I had on hand. I've discovered if I put the coin in and close, then stretch the mylar a little all the way round, the 2x2 then stays closed permanently.

They both have their pluses and minuseseses. Staple type are cheaper, although you have to buy staples then. Staples are ugly, rust (unless you use expensive copper staples) can easily scratch the coin above or below them. I've had them puncture coin pages. If your careful you can flatten them with pliers which helps. Staple type holders can be reused (eew) if you are desperate.
There is a concern the gum type may deposit a film on coins over time, although I know one collector that has used that type for 30 years without a problem. In any case they are safer than the plastics used in modern mint sets. Coins going yellow within 2 years in mint sets is pretty crook.

G'day Learjet, quote: "Staples are ugly, ... can easily scratch the coin above or below them. I've had them puncture coin pages. If your careful you can flatten them with pliers which helps." - Flat clinch staplers flatten the staples as they go in: no need for pliers. This prevents damage to other coins or to pages in albums. Snooba has put some links to flat clinch staplers, above. I bought mine at a stationer in Darwin for $8.90: brand name Leitz; model 5505; distributed by Esselte. I think the downside of self-adhesive 2x2, apart from expense, is that there are legions of horror stories about how after a few years, the adhesive comes apart, and your valuable coin falls out. Most people who use self-adhesives put a couple of staples in for insurance anyway. There have been other threads about this, perhaps in the "General" sub-forum. Peter

Peter, What's the name of the Stationer's store. I've checked at my local Officeworks & they don't have them. Thanks
