Update: I've posted a photo at the bottomPerhaps someone here would be nice enough to post values for various grades from Maccas, as I'm still waiting for my book to arrive? Thanks! I'm buying a 1915 Halfpenny from a dealer in a distant town, sans photo. We discussed the coin over the phone which he describes as a "problem-free Fine" ie no dings, verdigris etc. I'll be sure when it arrives, yet I thought it was an OK bet for $15--with "no-questions return privilege". I'm probably getting rather predictable--this is my style of collecting. Edited by KurtS 06/24/2008 8:57 pm

G'day, quote: "I'm probably getting rather predictable--this is my style of collecting." - you're also putting together a rather comprehensive collection of Oz predecimals.
I have Renniks 2007: mintage 0.72m VG 40 F 100 VF 400 has that cheered you up ? Peter

Peter, thank you! From the looks of it, I can't lose. I think the dealer simply went by Krause for price--what a difference!

Kurt, You are so lucky to get coins of this calibre for the prices you paying. It's great to see someone so far from OZ having such luck in getting some quality Australian coins. Good luck to you.

Nancy, I think so too! The truth be known, I'll easily spend hours looking for a particular coin--that's half the fun for me. Local dealers often focus all their attention on US coins or bullion, so I can often get great deals on Canada or Australia coins. A few months ago, I had a source for key date Canadian cents (1922-26), where I sold a few back to Canadians--at 1/2 CV. If this one source proves to be good, I may just have a few coins of interest for Australian collectors.

This coin just arrived today, and here's a photo. I'm very pleased. I especially like the flat, almost reflective fields and consistent, mid-brown color. Here I want to note the color in the photo isn't accurate, and despite what one person on another forum alleges, I see no signs of tampering with this coin. I also bought two Shillings: a 1924 in VG and a 1928 in aF. I'll post pics of those later.

Peter, LOL...this is as we say here "a keeper" However, this source may have some other decent pre-decimal silver coin if you need any. The prices are very good by Aussie standards, I think.

The pics here are better than the other forum Kurt. You can see clearly the contact marks that weren't evident on the other pics. The description of the flat, almost reflective fields, probably set off an alarm bell in Walters head. I believe, though I may be wrong, that Walter is Walter Eigner, owner of CGAU, our equivalent of your PCGS. And on another note, your coins arrived today. Thank you very much, love that Indian Head cent surprise.

Well, I guess my description and photos lack giving the correct impression--other than my positive reaction to the coin. Walter Eigner I'm not, but I trust I can tell a cleaned, polished, or otherwise doctored bronze coin. Nothing was given that adequately quantified his reasoning, and I tend to dislike unsupported analysis. That's about all I can put into words here. On the other hand, I'm very glad you like the coins! I'm also looking forward to your package.

Maybe the GOOD coin dealer in Toowoomba has some USA, I hope so, then I might be able to get a good deal.

Very nice Kurt, Photo's are hard to tell if has been cleaned, though your word on this would be enough for me. I particularly like the strong rims and beads, near fine no worries, just the lower band showing a little too much ware for Fine. Anyway, who cares, good score at that price Updated- Agree with others, Walter is amongst the very best, Dave G I wouldn't rate too far behind if at all.

Mark, thanks--I agree it's hard to tell minute details from photos. While I generally think I take good photos, some coin details are hard to capture, particularly color. The best I can tell, the coin is a problem-free aF. Still happy over this one!
