Discovered a new hobby and I need all of the knowledge I can get. Anyone else in the same situation? Proofs, grades, mint marks and errors I'm lost. This started with a few dimes looking different

to the show and don't worry - we're all obsessed to one degree or another. On the left side of the page there are topic headings like "General", "US coins...",etc. Check the glossary for new terms and so on. The Search Engine is particularly helpful as it will search all past discussions on just about everything having to do with coins.

I started out the same way you did last year this month (happy 1 year collecting to me ), I was overwhelmed for a while until I started getting the hang of it. Mostly due to this amazing forum which has allowed me to see a whole new part of coin collecting. This forum is full of helpful people who can help on just about anything. Ask away! My biggest tip to you is to collect what you like and what you find interesting. (Look at my signature ) Good luck

Thanks to everyone for the advice. What is all this about a 1968 Roosevelt dime without mint mark? What are the chances of a noob finding one on her try? Are they really a collectible coin? Found the "2017 Red Book" would the most recent the best option or is a reference source one should collect yearly? Let me know your opinions. Thanks again

The 1968 no S mint mark would be close to impossible to find as it is a proof coin and very expensive to buy. For a reference source I do recommend a RedBook but you don't have to buy it yearly. They can be bought every couple years or whenever you want. Not much changes in a year for pricing and such.

Are you sure of this? I'm sure that I have found one. What is a "proof coin"? How is it distinguished from another 1968 dime coin? I have seen photos and my coin is the same. I'm confused.
