There has recently been an upsurge in banknotes, especially the new generation $5, which has been altered using acetone and sold on ebay as an "error note".
An example can be found here

http://www.ebay.com/itm/25284657976...RK:MEBIDX:IT

As you can see someone lost a large amount of money buying these doctored notes.

This ebay seller has posted a warning about this scam

It's such a shame that people want to destroy such beautiful-looking notes. I find it difficult to fold them in half, let alone vandalise them.

For those who aren't convinced that this is a scam, take a closer look at the queen's portrait, which is slightly different on each note. If this were a genuine error, the queen's portrait would be identical on each note, and the two black dots wouldn't keep changing location.

Looking at the list of bidders, then checking sellers feedback, I think there may have been at least 1 shill bidder involved, so hopefully nobody lost anything.

No feedback left for or by the winning bidder.

In instances like this I add the seller to my list of shonks.

I've retained one of these notes thats been put to the test to see how things hold up on it. It appears that print comes off easily, and also the colour if rubbed hard enough. The one thing that appears will be long lasting is the holographic strip. after some wear and tear, it looks like it might just peel off, but nope, stayed fast, but some silver flakes do appear to come lose. The longevity of the vision impared bumps is going to be short lived once the notes are folded, creased and roughed up after a while.

This seller has been making a killing. Selling one after the other.
His feedback is private which I didn't think sellers were allowed to do

The latest con is to use acetone to erase one side of the note and then use a texta to write some random number. It makes it appear to be a NPA reject. This is the second one I have seen on ebay.

Some poor sucker is going to lose a lot of money on this item

Noticed that both the above "error" notes are being sold from sellers listing in the same region (Warners bay and West Wallsend are only 10 miles apart). Perhaps the same note doctor using his mates to sell the product of his doctoring? Any other dodgy listings from that region?

I have a vague recollection that penalties on Staff for removing or benefiting financially from RAM products have been increased significantly to where 2 years Gaol was the minimum.
It was raised in a TV programme on the shenanigans/corruption going on at NPA Melbourne a few years back, the Journo. correctly pointed out how can a Govt. body operate a slush fund to bribe overseas Politicians whilst keeping "fees/commissions" for themselves.
We will never know the truth and all the names of people involved as the last I read the Vict. Supreme Court has a suppression order on the case.

Anyway point being the seller could be in dangerous territory even if they are a 'shed' job.

This is an "error" note I made in 5 minutes using acetone and tape and it looks very much like so called "error notes" selling on ebay for $1500.

Be careful people
