For the first time - that I can recall - I received a single piece of mail today. This troubled me two fold. 1st - nobody loves me. 2nd - A coin collector lives here. The piece of mail I received was a single sheet flyer from the mint. "one of a kind soaring designs". On the address side was my address, and my m/c member number. I know that for the most part, Postal employees handle a piece of mail for a fraction of a second, only to scan the postal code. But its the wrong people that may have simply noticed the shiny new coins, and that I might actually get one sooner or later... or have purchased coins in the past. Am I paranoid? Think about it. Usually the monthly 'catalog' comes in a plain white envelope. All of my purchases simply come in plain brown envelopes or boxes. I don't remember anything like this, and I believe that the mint has taken that into consideration in the past as well. What are your thoughts? I called to cancel any kind of paper coming to my house - other than purchases and the monthly catalog. Edited by Dcadon 05/08/2017 2:55 pm

Call the number on that mail 1-866-440-2173 and tell them to get you off the mailing list or you won't buy the coins they offer. PS: I love you

I'd rather be a little bit paranoid than be a victim!
Getting off the paper mailing list is a good practice.

@Dcadon Thanks for bringing up this topic. It's been on my mind as well. Quote: But its the wrong people that may have simply noticed the shiny new coins, and that I might actually get one sooner or later... or have purchased coins in the past. You're not being paranoid, just logical. Recently a local CP worker has been caught stealing packages containing coins. Also, coins at Shoppers Drug Mart PO have been stolen in my area. I'll be cancelling any mail from the RCM, including the monthly flyer. Today it came in an envelope with a large clear window that shows pictures of the coins. No thanks. By the time I receive the catalogue I've already bought the coins I want anyway.

My postal outlet was bought out my new owners. When I went to pick up my parcels, with my ticket the postman left in my mailbox, the clerk hands me the packages and says "Oh these are coins from the Mint!" I was shocked. There were people lined up behind me and they could hear. The previous owners never mentioned a word to me about what I had ordered or from whom. All they asked was for my signature. Usually I have no problem speaking up; however, this time I just kept quiet thinking I better not make a scene because I was afraid that they may mishandle my future deliveries that were sent to them when I was not at home to accept. They did this for a few times and now they no longer say what I am receiving out loud. They ask for my signature and that is it!! I believe that someone else must have told them to not describe what they are getting because it is none of their business. RCM should remove their name from the top of the packages and simply show their address. Period. If I ever get a postcard from the RCM depicting new coins, I too will call and let them know that this is unacceptable. The Coin Shoppe uses "The Shoppe" and Canadian Coin and Currency uses CC&C which does not describe what they sell. The word " RCM" is well known by postal outlets because they sell their coins. When are RCM ships via manilla envelopes, they never have RCM written on top left hand corner. They only have their address and this is what they should be doing with their packages. Yes, the mailman and the post office both know "Coin Collector Lives Here":((((((((

I've been using a flex delivery mailing address for numismatic related items for some time now. On many occasions prior to the switch, the letter carrier would leave packages on the porch as they wouldn't fit in the mail slot. Fortunately I only had one issue with a coin not arriving to my home. Most of my numismatic subscriptions are in digital format so there is very little aside from the RCM catalogue that would attract any unwanted attention.

I think any experienced postal employee could spot an RCM address and packaging a mile away. I'm not sure what the RCM could do to disguise their packages but the openly addressed post cards and even the monthly booklets that often come in large window envelopes are not good. I have received some of each of those. My home was switched a few years ago to a community mail box. Often those 'postal employees' are contractors and at times, they are temporary workers. That makes me even more nervous. Maybe renting a PO box is the way limit the exposure a bit. Worse, in a little of 2 year of having a CMB, I've received mail for my neighbours, other people on my street and even the next street over. In the 20 years previous, that happened maybe twice and it was always my next door neighbour when couple of letter stick together. Always makes me wonder how much of my mail (including RCM stuff) gets put in the wrong box. I never receive it and my neighbourhood learns about my hobby. lol Interestingly, whenever I get misdirected mail, I deliver it to the correct house. But, a person next street over same house number, had one of my parcels delivered to them last year and they decided it was easier to 'return to send' than it was to walk over one street. It was small gold necklace that the sender should have sent more securely but didn't (ie require a signature). It eventually showed up back with the sender a few weeks later. Kind of sad to think someone in my neighbourhood is that lazy but at least they are likely too lazy to break into my house. lol.

A little paranoid, but hey, it'll keep you out of trouble. I like the way everything from Heritage comes from their publishing unit, Ivy Press, like this guy must order a lot of books.

A fellow coin club member buys a lot in auctions from Europe and they come in a plain unregistered bubble envelope. Organizations like the RCM should be conscious of security for their customers. Somebody there either does not know or does not care, and maybe nobody ever told them. These are not flyers for pizza.

Yup. Just got back from the community mail box and sure enough, the flyer the OP posted was in there. The identifier on it though is not my MC number, not that it matters much. Another area of concern is the blue box if you toss these things. It is a hotbed of info to identity thieves so telling them you collect coins is probably a bad idea too. Personal, I keep very few coins in my house and those that are here are fairly well hidden I think. In the end insurance really is the best way to go. But as they say, loose lips, sink ships. If only we could educate thieves that these shiny things don't have good resale value anymore.

I've gotten those single page flyers more often than I used to. The last two times, there was something sticky on the back, ( I think it might be the ink they use, that hasn't dried before coming into contact with another flyer?) and low and behold, there was a second flyer with someone else's name and address. The Number on the post card style flyer is in fact my MC ID number. As I've mentioned, this has happened twice, with 2 different addresses other than mine. The addresses are only a few streets over and since the flyers had been for advanced notice on upcoming coins, I would assume some of my neighbours are MC members too. I'm worried that the same thing may have happened to me in the past, and someone else out there has my name/address/MC number. Knowing they are MC means they likely have a couple grand worth of coins ( or rather, spent a couple grand on coins). This is very poor judgement for the mint to be making a mistake like this that jeopardizes their members security. I'd request they stop sending the flyers but I usually get it before I get any emails from my rep.

I cancelled all RCM mailings over two months ago, including the monthly catalog. It would always arrive long after public release anyway. Today I received the monthly catalog (in window envelope) before public release, which is a first. Conclusion: If anyone wants their catalog in time just cancel all mailings and you'll receive it much sooner. lol
