Hello everyone, I am super new to the love of coins (like 3 weeks) but I love it so much, and I am alreaalready driving my husband crazy! I have read a lot of Wexler, and some on die clashes. I have seen many pictures, but pictures and real life are completely different. There are limited resources where I am so I appreciate all the help. My question is are die clashes raised like doubled dies, or are they flat like impressions? Thanks again in advance oh and one other thing, can you have both die clash and doubled die on same coin in different spots?

Sheri - Welcome to CCF

Die Clashes are Raised. You probably can have both, though I can't remember ever seeing one. One has nothing to do with the other. A die clash occurs at the time the coin is struck by the force of the dies. A doubled die is how the die itself was made so to say. The doubled image is on the die itself.

Hope this helps :)

As Ken mentioned some are incuse and some are raised, and some show pushed metal as on these images. (note bust area clash on reverse) This one even shows a date on the reverse side (2:00-3:00)

Coins are struck at approximately the same force of sixty locomotives running into each other.Clashed dies are created when the obverse die and the reverse die hit each other without a coin between them. This causes some design transference that is reflected on the coins they then strike. Depending on recess or relief on the dies, the opposite is manifest on the coins.
The Doubled Die is imparted on the die when it receives it's face more than the intended once. It too, can be raised or recessed on the coins it strikes, depending on reliefs and recesses on the die.
