Just a cautionary note to those of you following the auction this weekend, particularly with the error coins. There are coins in that sale that, in my opinion, are not legitimate errors: http://www.icollector.com/1980-Nick...or_i27130185Fellow CCF member darryldarryl has shown us, and reproduced, errors like this with a hydraulic press. There cannot be a collar die with this coin, yet, there is a rim. In my opinion, this post-mint damage. http://goccf.com/t/278113----------- http://www.icollector.com/1993-Nick...or_i27130187Not a foreign planchet. In 1993, the 5-cent coins were struck on non-magnetic Cu-Ni blanks - pay attention to the rim and edges of this coin. It is post-mint damage. -------- http://www.icollector.com/1968-1989...or_i27130188The off-centre is legit. The secondary damage is post-mint. -------- http://www.icollector.com/1989-Doll...or_i27130196Again, CCF member darryldarryl showed us how he can make stuff exactly like this with a hydraulic press. You can see how this was formed by looking close to the rim edge of the reverse. Remember, the working dies are sunk from master dies - they are always flat. Most definitely post-mint damage. Wow, One has to watch error coins, Chinese counterfeits, and whatever else, my eyes are getting too old for this stuff.

Know nothing about the errors, but I traveled up to Montreal this past week for the viewing... There were some fantastic Medals in the Seminary's collection...
SPP, did you get in touch with them in regards to your concerns on those pieces?

Was going to go after the weird nickel on a foreign planchet until the points brought out and had a second long look at the obverse, and that loonie, second thoughts on how this could have happened, but someone bid decent prices for these two units. These errors if real are some of the coolest offered in a long while again if genuine.

Just ask darryldarryl to make you a loon dollar like that... it won't cost you $700....

I would rather keep the collectors informed.... Might be worth just shooting them an email in the future... I was very impressed the auction house and staff, and I would venture a guess they would have seriously investigated your concerns on the pieces if they were informed...

Cool errors over 500 bucks or so, both buyer and seller would benefit greatly if graded, most of the off planchet errors would have probably gained 100 to 200 more if they were PCGS or NGC slab. Thanks for info, would have owned two expensive duds

Yikes! It doesn't really surprise me that these pieces sold however what does surprise me is what they sold for. I can't help but wonder if any of these coins, if submitted, would actually come back as authentic and graded by any of the TPG companies. Any thoughts?

The 1982 and 2000 quarters at 2.80 and 2.77 grams were struck on New Zealand 5 cent planchets. The 1986 nickel was struck on a Dominican Republic 10 centavos planchet. As SPP stated, the 1993 nickel at 4 grams was fake. There were a couple others struck on dime planchets that were genuine too. I agree with SPP assessments of the non genuine coins. There always seems to be a fake or two in the auction lots but more than normal in this batch.
