I see the dime below listed on a reputable auction site. It is PCGS stabbed UNC Details Machine Damage. I've looked at it. The only thing I see that is questionable are some scratches on the reverse to the right of the faces, flowing towards AMERICA. Is this enough to justify a Details designation? In PCGS's opinion it is. That or something else. Too much light reflection to see other possibilities.

Check out this post from last month. http://goccf.com/t/285575&whichpage=1I think it just comes down to a grumpy PCGS grader. From these pics all I see is a small hit on the cheek and some marks to the right side on the reverse. I see some fine scratches on the reverse but If it was cleaned, the designation would be different (cleaned vs MD). If you like the coin and it's a good price I'd say go for it. Looks pretty nice to me.

Thanks kanga and LibertyEagle. I appreciate your responses. The post from last month was informative.
I do like the coin and have a bid in for it. We'll see if it goes above my limit.

Wouldn't it be nice if the TPGs became accountable (professional) by listing WHY they label something as they do?

1937 S is readily available, I would find another one, but it appears FB and if the price was right then I think is worth it to pick it up.

I think this is a '37-D, but I agree.

There are no shortage of 1937 dimes that are not designated as damaged; why bother with this one? Find one without problems.

Images can hide a lot of things and machine damage is certainly something that might not be seen.

Update: I picked up the coin for $21.00. In hand I still cannot see what might have caused the Machine Damage designation. I may have my local LCS take a look at it and provide their opinion. It looks very nice in hand.

I wouldn't bother trying more to find something wrong with that coin. As far as anyone can see, it is a really nice looking coin.

I hear you just carl. I bought the coin because I liked it and it fits my collecting interest. As many have wisely advised on this forum, "Buy the coin, not the slab".

A lot of times the "Machine Damage" Term at PCGS refers to the coin wrapping machines that cause the circular scratches on the coins on the ends. Either way for $21 it was a nice buy!
