Here is something nice I just found between other circulated coins of the same era: 1845, Straits Settlements. Contemporary Counterfeit 1 Cent Coin. The coin seems to have circulated for a some time and also got some honest greenish deposits (just as the others, which came with it, which were a few VOC duits and some indian 1/4 anna coins). The engraver missed much of the details, which was possible, because he possibly did not had a well preserved specimen in his hands to copy from, considering the image below, which shows a well circulated legit specimen of that date.

Very nice. I enjoy seeing coins and topics like this. Glad to know there are others sharing my interest. I'm sort of new to this area of collecting so I enjoy posts when they happen.

Cool, I have one of this type as well. They seem to be relatively common as I've seen about a dozen examples since purchasing mine :) Here is mine,

H Numismat, yes, yours seems to be from the same series, also a contemporary forgery, but intriguingly from a different die. Both cc coins have the same crude legends, but your portrait seems more detailed, also the diadem looks more like on the original ones. I am sure, that these coins will one day be sold and collected as their legit counterparts, once they are properly catalogued. For now I have to keep such pieces with me as I can not offer them on ebay. For now still a cheap, but who knows one day possibly a rewarding collecting area. This is why I also try to post such unusual pieces in order to see who else has seen such rarities. I am wondering if anybody else can post a 1845 contemporary forgery cent or anything similar in copper.

The type is very common. There are many different dies yet there is fairly high collector interest in the series. Not as great an interest as some other similar counterfeits like Hong Kong but still more significant than many other period issues.

People put these on ebay periodically, same as other contemporary pieces. Doesn't really seem to be an issue as long as properly described. Actually mine was from ebay. It is interesting the differences, but there are also unique characteristics that confidently point to the same point of origin or producer, like the Y in COMPANY which looks more like a V. PS: Bobby, thanks for fixing my reply to show the pictures rather than a link :)

Yes, have seen more than a few CCs of the 1845... more than a few of the later dates ranging from obvious simple casts to custom engraved examples.

Collecting begins with common coins like this. They might be cheap, but the build the structure of every collection.
After you have got the common ones then you can spend more money and/or time to find the harder to find examples.
Still, if these become collected then well preserved specimens will be hard to find.
