I am a young collector, by no means serious, but keep the odd balls I find and will occasionally buy. Recently a $5 bill from the Bank of Gallipolis came into my possession from an estate, and after doing some research on it online, could only find the basics, which I could tell from the bill itself.

Does anyone here know anything about the bill and how much one might say it is worth? I have no intention of selling.

Thanks,
Noah

Cool note, but has seen better days. Not too expensive even in better grades.

Heritage Auction description; The central vignette depicts Minerva and Mercury while a bag of coins spills out. Also, a griffin guards a safe. At below center, the faithful guard dog protects another safe.

Wowsk, just a little background: this is what's known as an obsolete bank note, sometimes called broken bank notes. They were issued directly by banks from the 1820s up until the Civil War when the federal government started putting out its own paper money. As Steve observed, your note is well circulated -- which typically means it was from a trusted bank. You can get a better sense of value on these by checking ebay's sold listings under "Obsolete Currency" and searching by state. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Obsolete-Cu...045573.m1684
