That's a toughie, I'd say MS60 at least, surfaces look rough for some reason. Doesn't appear to be circulated, close to full steps? Does appear to be PIDT on the reverse, see the circling around "FIVE CENTS" going up through M of MONTICELLO?

Also, think it is an WRPM-001 as listed on http://www.doubleddie.com a lot going on with this coin.
Purchased?

Boy if he wouldn't have cut himself shaving that chin. I think it would have been easily MS67, but it hurt it enough to become MS65 maybe 66 if it is the image and not as distracting otherwise.
This also appears to be a P over P mintmark. It looks like a DDO too but then I think that a lot of 1942 nickels are. Look at the TY in LIBERTY at the top.
In my book it doesn't get full steps because of a few ticks in the steps. 1942 nickels generally have excellent step count anyway. Very nice nickel there. AND I am not a good grader, I just pick out the nice ones, this one would be a definite keeper for me!

I looked at it again, and that nick just knocks it down. The better the coin the worse one little thing can hurt.
I have to give it MS64 now maybe MS65. Still, it's a dandy.

It wasn't too long ago I learned that a lot of nickels appear to have light scratches at the high points when they are not from wear. I learned that the planchets themselves had the imperfections and they remain where the least pressure was on the coin during striking. See that area on his jaw, the hair covering his ear?
I don't know how many I rejected over the years thinking that it was bag marks. Nickels are hard so the marks on the blanks still remain some on the finished product.

and I could be wrong about this

MS66 or 65 at the very least and there may be a die chip on the obverse near the T in liberty.

I had an incredibly hard time taking photos.. it has an insane amount of shine .. it is an RPM.. possible slight DDO.. very difficult to tell on this one.. I think it is also experiencing some beginning Die Deterioration.. here are a few more photos to show the steps better and try to show a little more of the luster.. :) thanks everyone ..

Looks like this RPM:

Stage C has the similar die crack on Monticello as OP's coin.

MS-65, limited only by the hit on the chin. Close to FS, but I don't think it makes it. Very nice!
