Those sound like coins that someone outside the mint made. They would probably only have a value as a curiosity, maybe $1-2.

@gooberlaur, first welcome to CCF. Second, without a pic, it isn't possible to be sure, but I'm betting that you have found a Magician's coin. You can search for those keywords and find lots of prior threads to compare against your piece. Here is a video showing how it is done:

If both sides are same, then it's magician't coin. (or trick coin). You can buy from ebay. $5 to $10.
