Hey, everyone. I dropped one of my commemorative silver dollars and cracked the clamshell. USM apparently doesn't sell them. Anyone know where I can get one identical as replacement? And, any advice during the transfer? Thanks!

They sell empty boxes on ebay. Use "no coin" in search in the modern commemoratives section. If you are talking about the clear plastic capsule, I suppose you could find one there too. I consider a clamshell to be the snap closing felt lined case.
Here's a link.

Just make sure the capsule is included if you can't find one by itself and have to buy the whole kit and kaboodle.

I was actually referring to the plastic capsules. Clamshell was probably not the right term. I will try ebay. Thanks for the reply.

I'm seeing American Eagle empty cases with capsules. Don't know, I think those are maybe larger than commem dollars. I have a few half dollars here but no dollar size. People send in the coins to get graded and keep the empty boxes. If you have a dealer nearby, try him out. He might have some from sending out coins to grading companies.

TNG, thanks for the legwork. I appreciate your help. I do have a local dealer and will see if they have anything. And, I have an UNC 86 silver eagle that needs a case as well, so I may get the ebay item you forwarded.

You want an AirTite capsule -- for a modern US commemorative silver dollar, it looks like an H38.

I buy mine (as kits with albums) from http://www.capsalbums.com/h-size-air-tite-capsules

Thank you Alpha. Will the airtite fit into the original USM case?

I don't know if the ones I listed would fit the original case, sorry -- I was thinking mainly for albums or general protection. To be certain, you'd probably want to stick with original (no-coin) packaging like TheNickelGuy suggested.

However, the links he posted include listings for Eagles, and you have a commemorative. The site I listed has H-sized capsules, but there are three different sizes based on the diameter of the coin. H38, H39 and H40 all have the same outer diameter (e.g. they would all fit in the same album holes), but the inner diameter is designed to fit dollars/commemoratives, general silver rounds, and eagles respectively.

Based on that, I would think that an H-sized capsule would work for you, but another set of the original packaging would be safer, or someone else here may confirm that a general H will fit.

My LCS sells hard clear plastic acrylic screw capsules in a range of sizes at 50 cents each. They are recovered from ex British Royal Mint proof sets.
He sells a range of empty proof set boxes as well.

'Phone around coin shops / stores after a Google search, to find what you need.

Again, thanks for the suggestions and advice. I am going to my local coin shop and see what they have. If I strike out, I will get one of the items listed.

Well, I took your advice and went to my local coin shop and asked if they had any USM plastic capsules for my dollar. They actually took a proof dollar out of one and gave it to me! I guess it didn't hurt that I bought a 20 cent piece at the same time. But seriously, these guys are great and we had a good long coin talk while I was there. Go by Rare Coins of Raleigh and say hello if you're ever in the area.
