I just added this 3CN to my collection. As always I'm having a hard time getting good pictures. I included 2 obverse pictures with different lighting that both came out terrible. The reverse pic is a pretty good representation of the coin.

This ones in a PCI slab. I think they were optimistic about the grade. I've got an idea on grade & am looking for other opinions.

I'm not sure this photo is any better than the last 2. I took this one in natural daylight. I guess I need to spend some time working on my photo skills. Detail is fairly good, but it looks flat & the luster doesn't show.

I can't tell by the obverse if this is MS or not. I'd have to go AU55.

I agree this coin should not make a mint state grade. Your blue-light photo shows some light hairlines which hopefully are faint enough so they won't set off any "cleaned" alarms. Luster is present but reduced in the open areas of the fields. I think light wear is present on the hair above Liberty's ear and brow. The weakness at some obverse denticles is strike-related, IMO. An AU-55 grade seems about right.

It's hard to argue with Prethen on 3CN's, but I would note that the die cracks on the reverse argue for a late stage strike. If the obverse die had the same number of strikes, I would speculate that the lack of detail in the hair could well be because of worn dies. Perhaps in hand one could go into the MS range. It is certainly no worse than AU-55 in my book. NIce coin!

There are many cracks on the reverse, including one thats hard to see that runs across the top third of the III. PCI has this one graded as an AU58. To my eye it's in the AU 50-55 range. Ya'll are pretty good considering the poor quality of the pictures.

AU53-55? Kinda hard to tell from the pictures though.
