This is my first bust dime, bought for my 7070. Although the pictures don't show it well there is beautiful blue toning on the obverse. The picture also makes it appear that the L in Liberty is weak, but it's strong in hand. I don't really know anything about these, so any opinons are welcome. Any ideas on grade or attribution? I don't know if the photos are good enough to attribute it, the seller said it was a Large O & JR-8.

I think this one grades in the middle of the VF range. There is flattening of all the hair high points and the eagle's talons appear worn flat on top but are all still separated.
I wonder about originality. The obverse toning could be natural but the reverse is awfully bright in the center. It has the appearance of a coin that had been dipped and was then able to re-tone around the rims.
What is that large raised area in the eagle's right wing? It looks like a really big die gouge. Is that perhaps typical of a JR-8 die variety?

Looks VF, but I don't like to see color on a VF coin. This indicates that is was likely messed with perhaps a long time ago.

I guess I'll go along with a mid-VF coin. I would like to see more details in the stars on the obverse, but must admit that the leading edges of the wings look pretty good. So...on balance, VF. Finding these coins with unaltered surfaces is not easy, and from your photos it's hard to tell if this coin has been cleaned, though the difference in toning between obverse and reverse would tend to argue in favor of at least a partial cleaning at some point. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy this coin, but would not want to pay a premium price for the grade.

Under magnification I'm not seeing any hairlines, dipping or some other form of cleaning is possible. I'll defer to the experts on that. It's a shame that my photo skills are so hit & miss.
Whatever is going on with the eagle's right wing looks die related. Two of the talons on the eagle's left foot are worn just enough to touch, so they aren't 100% separated. I was hoping this one would make it into the VF range, I paid F money for it.

Since you got it for F money, you did well.

trdhrdr - The reason I'm not thrilled with the toning, even though it looks perfectly natural and not bad, is that the coin appears to have been dipped and is retoning. The reverse is white. There appears to be no crust on the coin and for this level of wear that signifies that any originality has been cleaned/dipped off. I'm not saying this is a bad piece, but if you're after originality, this could would be a pass. Otherwise, the coin does look nice and is retoning nicely.

Prethen....I have to agree with that assessment. In hand the reverse is not as bright as the picture shows, but it is too bright in relation to the amount of wear. It's hard to find original coins for affordable prices, & when I bought it I thought more about the detail level & overall look than the originality of the surfaces. However, even knowing that it was cleaned/dipped I'm still more than satisfied with the coin.
