New purchase, albeit very common. I just really liked the overall look.

I'd go with F-12, but the reverse looks much better than the obverse.

Keep in mind: look at the cheek, rims, tips of leaves, etc.

This coin, to me, gets clearly into the VF range and possibly as high as EF. The mint had real trouble the first years these were minted. The nickel alloy is much harder than the other metals used in coins at the time, or so I understand, leading to uneven strikes and broken dies. I like this series because there are a lot of varieties and few people chasing after them.

Prethen,

Out of curiosity,as it doesn't involve the grade of the coin, is there a chance this is a Breen 2412, with a repunched date? Hard to tell from the excellent photo, but it appears there is a similar "tail" off of the "5". I like the 3CN also because of the number of varieties, although its sometimes hard to get a price on them.

Jim, I'll have to double check the coin and the original photo (which is much larger than this one). Thanks.

The original 2X2 had VG on it! I asked the dealer, also a friend of mine, to ignore the grade on the holder and tell me what he thought. He was thinking VF and said yep, it's a decent VF. I don't think the market value/grade of the coin could go much above a nice VF (choice?) grade due to the poor strike, but there's not a lot of true wear that I can see on the coin and it might technically be an XF. It has a coppery color, but I don't think it has been messed with (although I guess anything is possible).

I blew up the date in my hi-res photo and it almost seems that something's under the "5" but I can't really tell. Based on how it looks in hand, I really couldn't classify it other than a plain 1865.
