This is the start to my commemorative coin collection, I was totally inspired to start it by seeing nickelsearchers.

Don't move too quickly. You could have found that Stone Mountain without the cuts for little money. to the CCF!

I like the circulated comems you have. They looks nice. Try to get problem free examples. You will be happier in the long run.

I bought it locally with the cuts for not much money. I am going to get the Missouri coin next I think. I will replace the Stone Mountain circulated coin when the right deal comes along.

Somewhere along the line, you will come across a superior grade coin, and will have to accept it, because a lower grade example may never come available.
I have to agree: a set of evenly graded coins is quite OK for a type set, especially for commemorative Halves. That has to be in lower grades, if your budget will not allow you to go higher. I am also a type collector, but with a very different approach, that is not relevant to this thread. I DO, however have six rather nice American Halves of the 1892-1954 period.

Please do not buy damaged coins with the idea of upgrading them some day. Buying twice always costs you money.

Congratulations, nice start! As others have recommended, taking some extra time to look for problem-free pieces will be worth it in the long run, as well as making the hunt that much more exciting! Good luck with your set!

I am feeling really sorry that I posted this at all, a family member who is not a coin collector got me that Stone Mountain coin. It means more to me than a uncirculated one. I was excited to show my coins but sheesh I don't know, and I definitely would now never show my silver dollars here either. Moderators please delete this whole post

I like the start you are off too. A commem set is a big endeavor and I for one am not adventurous enough to tackle it. I think worn and circulated coins add character to an album - most of mine are circulated. No reason to be sorry for posting - the community was only offering a little advice to keep in mind as you go forward in a big picture sense.

Quote: family member who is not a coin collector got me that Stone Mountain coin. It means more to me than a uncirculated one. I will praise this every time. I am a huge supporter of the sentimental value. Those first two Ikes I got (see signature link) will not win any beauty contests, nor will I ever upgrade them. No need to delete this thread. There are plenty of us who appreciate you sharing. Do not take the suggestions the wrong way. In the end you will collect what makes you happy.

to the community,120grain keep at it!! Don't stop until you get them all. Its a mighty task but don't let anyone discourage you from taking it to the end. You are off to a good start. Just upgrade as you can. If the stone mountain from a family member means something to you, don't ever let it go.
