One of the coins on my long list is the 1915 Panama-Pacific commemorative half dollar. They're not inexpensive so I'm being selective as I'm shopping, but a good many of them have a ring on both sides, through the lettering around the rim.

It doesn't feel like it's part of the design, because not every coin has it. The first coin in the "ephemera" thread at http://goccf.com/t/281230 has toning there, but the envelope packaging in that post doesn't suggest that anything in the release process would cause it. It kinda looks like what we've described as coin roller damage, but I don't see this effect on many other coins, and not as frequently as with this release.

Wikipedia suggests they didn't sell well. Is this a storage effect? What do we think?

No idea. And I'm with you as far as getting a nice looking coin.

I don't mind some honest wear on a circulated coin, but I'm wary of anything that looks like it might spread and turn the coin black.

What a nice design. If I was forced to own one with a ring as pictured, I would certainly be happy with it. On my list too. I could get this fake one from Chili on ebay .... no rings on that one.

In order to not hijack this nice thread I reported that coin here on CCF in the proper dept.
Sorry for butting in here with that.

I believe that ring is tab toning from the way the issue was originally packaged in a holder from the mint. That envelope in the ephemera thread might have just been an outer envelope.

That makes sense, Zurie. All the harder to find a nice one. Good thing I'm on a budget (like that really matters half the time).

Obverse is one of my favorites in the Classic Silver set.

I'm sure this is from original packaging since its so prevalent.

I don't find it too distracting. I'm more concerned with the tone, if present, as many of these have ghastly toning.
