Hi, I found this nickel and I'm not sure if it's rare or worth anything. Any help would be appreciated! It seems to say: Tinian Mariana Islands 194_ which was a battle during World War II, which might explain it. Maybe the carving of a soldier?

That's certainly interesting. It looks to be in pretty good shape (other than the carving of course). The battle was in 1944 but, I can't make out the last digit either. It does seem highly plausible that a 1941 nickel was being carried by a soldier leading to, during and after the battle who made the carving. It could be a very nice piece of personal history. Edit: if I had looked at this earlier, this may have been post number 1944.

IMO, from a numismatic point, it's a coin with PMD (Post Mint Damage), and would be considered scrap. But, I bet it would of interest to those that collect militaria. Only issue is the lack of provenance, so it wouldn't fetch much if sold. But it is a neat coin nonetheless.

Quote: It looks like someone took an electronic engraver to the nickel. I would keep that coin. Most of us have a "interesting PMD" bucket, into which that one would go if it were mine.
