Daniel Carr is an avid collector of the privately made contemporary "micro-o" counterfeit Morgans and has created a page with some amazing general Morgan info and info about the "micro-o" family... MUST READ & bookmark http://www.moonlightmint.com/VAM_pr..._made/00.htm

I'm not a Morgan collector, but that was still fascinating. The theory about the Pittman act at the end is the kicker.

Thanks for this, Cascade. Very informative and I, too, will check my "O" mintmark.

I'm once again speechless. I was totally unaware of these until now. I don't even want to know how many I may have. I jumped through the slide show, but were these early fakes made from 90% silver?

Yes. They were made out of silver. Typically melted down sterling flatware, platters, cups etc

I'm still a fan of the Mafia involvement in New Orleans theory that has been floating around (that the NO family either hired and/or extorted New Orleans Mint workers to strike these counterfeits using equipment and dies either from the no mint itself or "appropriated" from other branch mints or Philadelphia, or even on foreign coin machinery from Mexico where the Revolutionaries would sell literally anything to finance the war against the Royalists.) This fits in nicely with Mafia control of the casinos in New Orleans, which is a well-established fact, and it would have allowed the casinos to take in real silver dollars and paper currency and pay out in fake coins, providing an avenue to get the dollars into wide circulation; such a use would also be consistent with heavy circulation wear. The distinctive mintmark would have made it easy for the average employee to quickly identify the fakes. Nice to know DC is a VAM guy, too. I cherrypicked an 1899-O Micro O awhile back, one of the possible coins that may have been copied by the counterfeiters. Even though it's a real US Mint product, the connection to the forgeries is alluring.

Excellent read. I wonder how many I have in my culls, etc? BTW, why is everything sold out and discontinued on his website? Popular stuff huh?
