I was going through some coins and when looking for a 1932 far 2 variety I stumbled onto this. It looks like they used a different font for one of the coins. One date has a taller looking 3 with shorter middle bar of the 3. The other looks wider and has what looks to be a longer middle bar of the 3. I'm curious to know if anyone has any idea about this... or is it just me?

As you can see from the lack of replies, there is little interest in such a micro level difference. Total speculation on my part, but maybe the middle bar of the three is the result of the working hub changing (i.e. flattening out a little) as more and more working dies are made.
Rest in Peace

Scratch that, wrong coin, I'd say you're close, top 32 shows die polishing wearing down of die face widening of appearance.

What I do see on lower 32 is elongation upwards, a bulging so to speak on upper curve of 3 due to coin rim contact in bag

I see quite a few differences. I zoomed in on the picture. Red, blue, black, and yellow color coding in the following pic are some differences in addition to the different middle bars you speak of.

Imho , everything in those pictures can be attributed to
wear and PMD or a combination of both except for Earle42's
"peak" in the three , something is going on there caused by ?

Interesting...

I just went through 105 1932 nickels that I have.
11 are 'peaked' and 94 are 'rounded'.

Even more interesting is that all of my Far 2 nickels (4) are 'peaked' (they are included in the 105 total).

Plus at least two more 'peaked' Far 2s that are currently on ebay (I couldnt tell on the third one):

I only have around two of each date (maybe a couple more) - but at present are not accessible.

Here is another experiment with the peaked 3. The red line was drawn onto the left photo and copy pasted onto the right one. A visible gap shows.

The yellow line on the left 3's middle bar is centered on that bar. The green line on the right 3 is centered on that 3's bar (I drew very small, centered dots then connected them for each bar)

There is an evident gap under the end of the 2's leading edge on the peaked 3.

Unless someone can find explain/knows a way this can be done through Die Deterioration or other means, it looks like you are right in there being more than one font.

You are more than welcome - I enjoy graphics work and its simple, fast, and easy with the free program called "Skitch" - works on Mac or Windows.
