That looks like an SE I had, was in a private celebratory gift cardboard holder, had blue ink on cardboard, inside a plastic snap case. Was a 1998 or 2000 if I remember, sold it. This may be similar situation...possibly slabbed prior to toning, but chemical reaction had already started.

Question: Is it artificial? Answer: Just take a look at this seller's other items for sale.

There was just a discussion about this seller on CT a few days ago and nothing good was posted about him.

I would guess seller has figured out how to artificially tone his coins judging by about every coin he has listed has some toning & some extreme toning. Not my cup of tea

The coin holder was micro drilled and gased to create the toning.

I speculate that he has not only figured out how to tone coins, but how to do so with slabbed coins. Interesting, seems that only PCGS coins are affected, but that may be because it would raise suspicions ti have NGC toning without a star on the label....

A lot of the NGC coins have photos and they may not be as friendly to his technique. He likes the three prong PCGS holder and will make from one to three holes where the plastic prong does not touch the coin. On the coin in question one hole was drilled. On the reverse note the blue area, the blue area is the entry point of the gas. You can find this pattern on many of his coins.

Here is a holder from the seller that has a solid ring around around the coin. Note the PCGS strip on the reverse below the coin as it is discolored and warped from the gas. Sometimes the paper label will warp as you can see a little buckle in in this paper label.

Thanks for all the good info. Once I posted I saw the same seller with similar items so something seemed odd. Add in all the negative reviews and I think this is a confirmed scam. I can't believe they tone them AFTER being slabbed to avoid an AT details grade. I can see why so many are worried about the future of the hobby.

This seller is well known for selling AT coins.
