I miss this coin since it's sitting in a bank safety box.
Don't think this coin was ever put here for grading opinions.
Enjoy.

No cheating !

Is that a proof or business strike version? (I am leaning towards business strike)

As well struck as the "ONE CENT" is, which is so often weak in this short series, I'd not be surprised to learn that this is a circulated proof coin. There appears to be some wear on the eagle's breast, mid-tail feathers and on the edge of the left wing. I'd go AU (or PR) 50; maybe even 55 if this is a business strike (since the strong reverse could have robbed a bit of detail from the eagle's breast in a business strike. Or so my hypothesis goes.)

Very nice coin, and I can see why it spends a lot of time in a safety deposit box!

Due to wear on breast, thigh, and left wingtip I'm going to say around EF40-45. I'm just going by Photograde here, and will probably stand corrected.

It is a circulated proof (S-9). Cannot see from the photo, but there is a centering dot below the left serif of N in cent on the reverse.

Ah...I was wondering about the reverse and die pair! You probably already know this,
but Rick Snow has some interesting comments on his site:

quote:
1858 Strikes.
1856 S9 about 1500 struck. Proofs. Struck after S8. 1858 is the year 1856's began to be sold to the public. It is believed that this die pair was struck for that purpose.

Awesome coin 1Sikevo, and a terrific centerpiece for a really advanced type set. I try to get better than common dates for type, but the 1856 would really be going above and beyond! Thanks for sharing, it's beautiful!

Oh yeah, I'd think it deserves a PR50 grade.

Kurt - I had an S-3, but it was only VG8 details (ANACS) with a small corrosion spot on the obverse. The word "corroded" on the holder always bugged me and I was fortunate enough to find another 56 in better condition for just a little more money.
I enjoyed looking at the coin regularly but decided to put it in a bank box for the safety of both the coin and my family. It now sits there together with the 1877 IHC, 1909-S IHC and 1909-S VDB. I am considering to "rent" it to a dealer for coin shows as it attracts a following into their booth.

Grade will be posted tomorrow.

I think you mentioned your trade before--good choice!

I also have a few coins like that I DO NOT keep at home--only the "fun stuff" is here.
But I keep very detailed photos so I can still study my collection here.
