I ran across a 1858 large cent. It is damaged, in hopes of looking like an error, assumed.
I am not a large cent collector.
The coin has been 'folded' over from 12:00 to 4:00 on the reverse. Not fully touching the face, just rolled inward a little.
The kicker is, I said, this coin flips like a yankee coin.
Came home and looked it up to see that there are only 3 certified with the 'flip' state.
Even though it has been messed with, is it still a good buy at 40.00 canadian? Or, is it a fake, damaged to hide something?
Would like to hear your opinions.
Thanks.

Photos are essential for such a difficult coin to verbally describe.

When you say "flips like a yankee coin" do you mean "coin alignment" ?

An 1858 Canadian large cent in coin alignment would be a real rarity, and a crying shame if someone destroyed it by messing with the rim.

If it is common medal alignment, and has extreme PMD as described, then $40 is too much, even for this year.

I can not provide any pictures, as the coin is at my local coin shop.
The yankee flip I talk about is die alignment.
Like they say "too good to be true".
The rarity of the die alignment, with the intentional damage has my "spiddy scences" tingling.
I have a good relationship with the owner, and have talked counterfits in the past. I'll go back on Mon. and take a closer look at the piece. As I stated, I'm not up on these coins, but the year and die alignment tweaked my interest.
Would a TPG even touch it with so much damage?

Be careful. There are MANY counterfeit 1858's in coinage alignment out there.

You could still take a few photos of it at the coin shop.
Click away and keep the clear sharp pics for us here.

If you are going to take a few photos, then take at least one with the coin in front of a mirror, so that both sides can be seen at once.

As I don't have a large cent collection started yet, I am going to take a pass on this one. Thanks for the help everyone, but my gut just is not sitting right with this one. I'll spend the $ on loonies instead.
