I understand how you feel, Nick. But the problem is that the number of people who regularly post in this section (Ancient, Greek, Roman, and Medieval) is so small. Unlike at Forum, where they have many more folks who read and contribute to more specialized sections, we have a small core group of perhaps fewer than a dozen "regulars." I think that if CCF broke up this area into more specialized sections like Greek, Roman, Eastern Empires, Byzantine, etc., traffic and contributions in each area would be too light. It's not an ideal situation to clump it all together, perhaps, but I can understand why it has to be. For me, the positive side is how much I have learned here that I would not have learned if areas were separated. I suspect that 90% of my CCF time would be spent in Eastern and Greek sections if everything was separated. I would have missed so many gems (on medieval, Roman, Asian, etc.) that have come through this area over the past few years. I hope you will stick around and continue to contribute, Nick, even though you're frustrated with the format.

An option would be simply adding the word to the title of the post. Then it would be very easy to see the post was about GREEK or ROMAN or whatever. I see it is done sometimes and others not. Just a thought. However, I have no skin in this game and as I like seeing all the old coins in this section of the forum. Always interesting and amazing how you all attribute some of these.

I agree that within the CCF, that ancients sbould be left as one subforum.

How ironic. Low traffic for all of ancient Greek, Roman, Parthian, Indian, Chinese; medieval (incl Byzantine and all other divisions) for all parts of the globe. That doesn't make sense.
I wonder if that much diversity in a single list might be part of what keeps visitors from returning or contributing. On the other hand, what are the logical subdivisions?
The idea of adding identifiers to the subject line sounds good for the reader, but a nuisance for the writer - time after time after time. On the other hand, what can you do with "What is this ancient coin?" for which the writer can't limit the category anyway.
Forum has more knowledgeable numismatists and writers in their ranks. We have enthusiasm. Now, if we could only get some of those Forum guys to contribute here as well, then maybe some more would come of it. But how long has the team here been hoping for some of that?

Looking at a very rough avg posts (#replies/#topics) based on this moment - this ancients forum is not averaging that much lower than US CLASSIC or Canadian coins forums. And is on par with US MODERN and better than US PAPER. So looking at it that way I would say you ancient folks are holding your own very well ... And I agree that my idea of adding the type into the subject would become an annoyance to the poster and not always applicable

This forum is not that slow. The 100 topics on the first page have all been posted in in June. However there is not enough activity to justify splitting it in 3.

Interesting question @marsias. I use CCF as the sole source for my online coin education, so it is the only system that I know. I actually like these somewhat disparate topics all glommed together as it has greatly increased my knowledge (and interest) in several other areas. With increased traffic and posts, I'm sure that Bobby would be all over sub-dividing things appropriately.

As has been said, 80% of the posts on this subforum have been made by less than 20 people. Few of us collect one area exclusively, and there is a culture of inclusion and broadening one's horizons here. If we were getting continually swamped by topics every day, I think we would be on board with the sub-forum idea. Specific to the subject of Greek coins, there haven't been many posted here lately. I blame DavidUK for leaving us for his watch hobby

We might not have the activity that other forums have, but what we have is a close knit group of collectors with diverse interests. IMO to form sub sections would limit exposure to all areas of ancient coin collecting. When I first started collecting I only collected Roman coins, if it weren't for the exposure I got from this and other forums to other types of ancients I would have not expanded my interests into other areas. I don't really collect Chinese or Islamic coinages but I still enjoy reading and seeing all the posts about them. We as collectors and historians should not limit our knowledge to just one area. Sorry but I don't see this change happening.

Nicely put Echizento.
I think it would be ill advised to create more sub forums. Given the limited number of posts, it will reduce the appearance of activity, which in itself could drive people away. I will not mention names but there are other forums which have too over-complicated things with multiple boards, resulting in some boards averaging 1-2 posts a day, and others which lay inactive for months at a time.
Forum participation seems to be dropping globally. I read several articles on this subject recently. The authors of each appeared to blame other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. I would be concerned for what it says for our society if the need for narcissistic public broadcasting and immediate gratification which other social media platforms satisfy, spells the long term demise of a medium long proven to facilitate in-depth and structured discussions on specific subjects in a manner conducive to continuous learning and preserved for the later reading of others.

This is certainly not my area of expertise but, I have a general thought. @marsias Seeing that you joined a tad over one week ago, you really should spend a little more time interacting with other members in the forum to get a better feel for how it works. If you're interested in only Greek coins, you may be spending some time in the "Unidentified" subforum as well. If you click on something and it turns out to not be Greek, either learn about something different or move on to something else. I disagree that typing the country (or empire) of origin in a topic title is bothersome or too much work. How many letters and how much time are we talking about there? Also, having more specific topic titles aids forum search results.
