That's attractive toning and totally original au50/53. I'd leave it be. If it was very dark black ugly toning then I'd consider a dip.

AU-55, and I would be very leery about dipping that coin. I don't think that it will come out well at all. The toning is too set in the surface, and you could end up with something that might be kind of ugly. Besides most advanced collectors want undipped coins these days.

 With AU-55 . Obverse is nicer than reverse . IMHO never dip a circulated coin. Besides the coin is already slabbed . Did you really want to crack it out just to dip it ? Then what ?

The reverse is worn a little more than the obverse, although it usually holds slightly less weight. I would say AU-53, the eagle just has a bit too much wear to warrant a 55. Either way, definitely leave it as is in the slab, it's a beautiful Barber!

My imaging probably didn't help, it has deep reflective fields, and I believe what is seen as wear is an element of the lighting. I don't have an axial set up so it makes it difficult to capture proof coins. Knowing that this is a proof coin was why I asked about dipping, there is no wear and the gray undertone really takes away from the proof fields and I believe has hindered the grade. I'm 90% sure I'm not gutsy enough to actually crack it out and dip anyway haha.

sharp rims and denticles identify this clearly as proof. I see rub on eagle's head. pr58.
