I just picked this coin up from a lady that works at the drive through I frequent. I got home and put it under the scope and noticed what looks like a spike head. The line going through the 1 is pretty faint,But the rest of the crack is pretty visible. There is also a second (but smaller) die crack on the reverse.I do apologize about the poor quality of the pictures,But the batteries on my camera died before I could get all the pictures I wanted.I feel like I got pretty lucky for my first coin like this possibly being a spikehead even if it does or doesn't add to the value! Thanks for looking and all advice is appreciated!

I didn't even see that. I was looking at, what appears to be,

one coming from the 2nd or 3rd star beneath UNUM.

Those ARE die cracks. Die cracks on Morgans are fairly common.

Thanks for the info. So I assume spike heads are also common?

Spiked head is just a "slang" term for a die crack that runs from the rim into the head rather than along the lettering. Die cacks can happen anywhere and they do. I don't consider "spiked heads" to be any more special than any other die crack.

Nice find! Spike Head is the term used on Cuds On Coins for a Die Crack That connects the rim and head or neck on the obverse of a coin. It's a great identifier, and very useful in cataloging and listing these errors. Other identifiers are the BIE cent, BAR nickel, etc. Giving these errors these names also makes it easy to know what coins are, even without seeing them. They are not at the top of the list of desirable errors, but are on the list. Many people collect these, as they fill the gaps between finding other errors. If I were you, I'd contact JC Stevens at http://cuds-on-coins.com/ to see about getting it listed. As far as value, a few dollars on nickels, pennies, etc., on this one the Silver Dollar probably trumps the Die Crack, but still a nice find.

I did a quick search on the "die crack" page at VAMworld and I didn't see it listed.
I would suggest moving the thread over to the VAM forum so the experts can take a look at it.
