I really enjoyed the bison reverse on the 2005 Westward Journey nickels and I feel it should have been a permanent fixture along with the long lasting portrait of Jefferson we've become used to for so many decades. I think returning to the Monticello reverse wasn't a forward thinking idea. The current obverse is just simply put, hideous!

, iv'e been thinking that for a while too. To be fair, the nickel has never really been a looker, aside from the Buffalo nickel and the last 3 2004/5 nickels' reverses.

I would have been really excited about the nickel if what I suggested was implemented. I think it would have been a popular move among collectors.

Not bad...though I'd rather not rehash old designs. It's like the Walking Liberty/American Silver Eagle design just won't ever be retired.

The problem is the people that run Monticello "think" they "own" the Jefferson nickel. When we went through the Lewis & Clark Westward Journey nickel series they had a fit and were terrified that Monticello was going to be permanently removed from the coin. They only piped down once the Treasury assured them that the traditional reverse would be returned to the coin. It's crazy.

Quote: It's crazy. Yep. It's as if that building is a more significant piece of Jefferson's and United States history than the Louisiana Purchase or Lewis & Clark's expedition or even the bison. Hmmm...

I'm not feeling the TJ - Buffalo combo. I'm thinking of a reverse similar to the obverse of the 1920-1930s Oregon Commens. A map of the US with the Louisiana Purchase outlined? Not sure how it would look on a coin that size but would be more interesting than Monticello.
Alternative compromise woulld be to go to the original Schlag demo with the more interesting perspective of Monticello.

I like the buffalo and the traditional Jefferson OBV. Personally I think we need to clean out the new artists at the mint and get more talented people like the older guys were who used to design our coins.
On a scale of one to ten, I give the Walker, Merc, etc. high scores. Most modern stuff like the current Jefferson OBV goes at about 1. I also am very tired of the modern quick-come-up-with-something-for-a-new-quarter-REV design that has been going on. There are some nice designs there also, but some are as bad as the OBV of the Jefferson. Unfortunately, the good designs get lost in the over abundant number of quarter REV designs we have now.

In their efforts to "revitalize" our currency, I really think it's gotten out of hand, starting with the original 50 State Quarters and territories. Though it succeeded in its intentions I'm sure, I'm kinda wishing they had just left everything alone....

The statehood & territories were great but it should have ended there. I don't exactly think national parks needed commemorating. The eagle reverse should have been reinstated or at the very least a new eagle design. Now I don't even bother looking at my quarters in change nor do I collect the ATB series at all. It's all overkill IMO.

I think our mint was trying to ape the Canadian one. Years ago Canada started to make s new quarter designs and made money (pun and literal) at it. So our mint took the most circulated coin to try to make money from redesigning it every year. With profit being realized, the Canadian mint went on to make so very many new collectors' coins per year it is unbelievable. The RCM has trashed their own market - read the Canadian forums. I fear we will do/are doing the same here. I hope I am wrong, but I think that in the future, even the "hockey pucks" will be worth only melt.
