I posted the story of this coin on the main Classic Coin Forum several weeks ago and the photos last week. Link http://goccf.com/t/290240Here are the photos again: I am interested if the coin matches any VAMs. I did look at VAMworld but I am not well schooled on Morgans as of yet and would appreciate any expertise. I will be seeing the young man who owns the coin again tomorrow and would like to help him as much as possible. I am advising him to have it graded, and it has been put in an Air-Tite. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the world of Morgan dollar VAMS!! First thing you need to know is EVERY Morgan is a VAM. The trick is figuring out which one it is. I find it helpful if you start by date position. Most of the time this will help you narrow it down quite a bit. While I am not a pro by any means at this I did try to VAM this one. To me it looks like VAM 5 Far date Dropped C http://www.vamworld.com/1889-CC+VAM-5I may be wrong and a second opinion would help.

XF'ish. Send it to ANACS for authentication and grading.

Thanks for the info. It does look close to VAM 5. Difficult even with the original higher res photos. I can not find the die scratches above T of LIBERTY or the pitting in the neck wing gap as described. I will try to get close up photos of these regions tomorrow as well. Also, is there a reason everyone who has mentioned grading on both threads said use ANACS? Is there something about Morgans with ANACS? I don't have a hangup about any of the three but PCGS usually brings more at auction. The owner is strongly considering selling.

ANACS can grade and authenticate the coin in less than 30 days. PCGS and NGC have longer turnaround times UNLESS you pay for a faster service.
Work a deal with your friend to buy the coin based on the results from ANACS. You can then market the coin at your leisure and make a few bucks for yourself.
I do not believe the coin is AU. More like XF.

Thanks for the link Chute. As the title said, killer price. I'll see if I can dig up a few to go with it. I think I could get the count to 8 for that price.
Edit: I looked at the restrictions, minimum 5 coins with a max value of $500 each. This coin is $2,500 easily at XF-40 or maybe more. This coin is not eligible for the deal, but I can still make use of it.

Another reason to use ANACS is the person who attributes Morgan dollars is John Roberts. He is one of the best in the business.

Actually, I got to speak with John Roberts and J.P. Martin over the ANA World's Fair. It was awesome, as Morgan dollars are my specialty.

I'm not an expert on VAMs but the date looks suspicious on this one. There was clearly another number under the 9. Looks like it was 1885 or 1883. As well, the 9 is way high and out of line.
If this coin was "found" or a "steal", I'd be plenty wary.

That 9 location is known and common for the year, so less of a worry than it would be from a different date. Any 1889-CC found raw is worthy of healthy skepticism, of course, and I'm not really so sure about this one - the mint mark doesn't match up to anything known for me. The two C's don't seem to match each other for size and shape, and the "drop" on the second one needs to me more pronounced for VAM-5. It's also too far to the left. There are only two Far Date 1889-CC's, and this mint mark doesn't look good for either of them.
