I received change at a gas station and the quarter was unusual. It laid on the console for weeks and I finally decided to investigate a bit. Is this a mint error or has some clown spent a lot of time sand the edge off this coin. I don't see signs of grinding but no absolutely nothing about coins or defacing them.

It's Post Mint Damage. What does the other side look like? I think they used to call something like this a Dryer Coin. A coin that goes through a dryer or slot machine a few million time and gets worn down.

Here's a good thread on Dryer Coins: http://goccf.com/t/143863&whichpage=1

Your coin may have been worn down by being stuck in a machine or it may have been deliberately damaged, It is not an error coin. But keep looking -- there are lots of goodies out there to be found.

to the Forum.

Man made grinded down the circular sanding is evident on the circumference of the reverse around the tablet.
