I'm interested in selling some of my collection to make room for new material. This would be my first attempt at selling coins here online. This may be a basic question but what is the best way to ask for payment? I do have Paypal but never received money through it...only spent it. . I'd prefer to keep my name and address out of the transaction if possible for security reasons. Does handling the transaction on PayPal do that? What ways does the rest of the forum find best?

Chesterb *** Edited by Staff - Please review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. *** PayPal is secure that way, but, to mail by USPS you have to have a return address on packages that you send using their insurance & services on, Priority Mail, Express. You can make up a name, but if you need to make a lost claim, you HAVE TO have a return address or you lose. (Former USPS employee)

Chester , most of the transactions on CCF are either by PayPal, Personal Check , or money order . As long as your buyer has at least 50 or more posts ,your fairly safe . As far as I know there has not been any problems with CCF members with these transactions . Start listing ,can't wait to see what you have for sale .

If you take cash, you must inform the buyer where to send it. If you take a check, you must inform the buyer where to send it. If you take PayPal, you must give them your PayPal email address. As stated, when you send out the coins, you have to have a return address.

chesterb, thanks for asking this before I get to 50 posts. I'm a long way from selling but I might want to buy something and I didn't know the answer to your question.

Use PayPal friends and family, and yes, use your real name.

Get a PO box. If you're a collector who receives packages, you should already have one. I've dealt with the Post Office commercially for over 16 years as a marketer. The one thing I've learned, is that you need to be as just as distrustful of your mail carrier as you are of the person mailing you checks for coins.
It's sad but true. I've found bundles of my bulk mail dumped into dumpsters behind Post Offices multiple times. I was even threatened by a postal inspector after discovering the discarded mail in the dumpster at a postal facility. Still rubber banded together for the carriers route. Thousands of dollars spent, and they threatened me for stealing postal property after a dumpster dive.

Everyone needs to review the CCF selling rules. Quote: Payment options must be clear. You may not use any wording that suggests getting around Paypal fees whatsoever, including asking for additional money to cover them. Coin Community will not be a part of cheating PayPal. There is no argument that will change our mind so please don't bother trying. Listings that break this rule will be removed. If we find out you are even suggesting it after the fact there will be repercussions. It's free to sell here so just get over it, if you can't just sell somewhere else.

Using paypal gift with random people is a great way to get ripped off. And yes there have been people ripped off before. ebay is the way to go if you want some protection or just take a check and wait for it to clear

Quote: For selling coins through CCF and using paypal, use Goods & Services. If you use Friends & Family too much with random people, your account may get flagged. G&S is the most secure and makes any reason for a refund that much easier to handle as opposed to check/MO. It also allows for a faster transaction. Yes, I quoted myself for reiteration. Using F&F for sales here is asking for trouble. Selling on CCF allows opportunities to not pay certain fees but, if payment is made through PayPal, get over it. Pay the minimal fee. Ask member nohope587 about receiving too many F&F payments. Buying and selling is not what F&F transfers are for and we all know it. Thank you jbuck for posting the rules plain and clear. However, that last sentence needs some grammatical adjustment for clarity.

The only way to keep your name totally out of it is to sell through a dealer on consignment.

Use PayPal and pay the little fee. Doing bad things, including cheating PayPal, is an indication against your own honesty.
There is such a miniscule chance that you would ever have problems that it falls into the same arena as those who purchase meteorite insurance for their homes.

While protecting yourself is always a good idea, going to such extreme lengths as not wanting your name and address known to a buyer is just not practical or necessary. Think about ebay sellers. People sell high end stuff all the time with name & address known to buyers with no ill effects. Sure there is the occasional robbery but unless you're selling monster boxes of silver or many 4figure coins I wouldn't worry about it. However you can get a PO or PMB box if it makes you feel better but your real name needs to be out there as it's on your PayPal & for money orders.

Thanks everyone for your input. Just to clarify, I have no problem paying a PayPal or any other fee. I'm not sure how that became a question. My concern was protecting my identity. I know it sounds silly to some but once it's out there are many ways to find out where I work (LinkedIn), live, my immediate family members, etc. I know it's the new norm but still it gives me the creeps. I have some neat type coins and a partial set of MS-63-64+ Franklins I'd like to sell. I'm going to look into it some further and will post when I'm ready!

Quote: I'm going to look into it some further and will post when I'm ready! Good decision. When I first joined CCF, one of the very things that immediately appealed to me was the security of needing the 50 posts to buy or sell. I have done both here and the CCF family has been great to me. I prefer doing business here rather than ebay etc b/c I know it will be a friend who I am working with.
