Sent my first raw coins to a TPG, and I was really nervous about it. The paperwork itself is a lot to get through, then getting them ready to ship and having all of those expensive coins in the mail (never shipped coins either). When I dropped it off at the post office, I had the postage already on it, the guy looked at how much postage was on there and gave me a look. PCGS got my coins yesterday and now I'm nervous about what they get graded at.

Hi Ericnh,
As long as you ship the coins by insured, registered mail you shouldn't have to worry about it. Since PCGS has already received your coins, you can breathe easy.
So, what did you send in? You don't have to say, but I'd like to know. Hopefully the coins will get the grades you are expecting. Please post the results when they come back.
Good luck!

I was nervous though. I tracked the package a few times and was really happy that PCGS even emailed to let me know that my 8 coins arrived. The insurance thing bothered me a little because they were raw coins so I had to self grade (not so good at it). So I insured for what I thought they were worth, but I kept thinking what if they grade higher than what I think they are (I'm conservative when I do grade) and they get lost. Obviously I would never know what the true grade was if they did, but it still made me nervous.
1907 $20 Liberty 1907 $5 Liberty 1950 Franklin Proof 1951 Franklin Proof 1950 Lincoln Proof 1951 Lincoln Proof 1914-D Lincoln 1909-S Lincoln
The proofs were part of a set that were not in their original packaging. The gold were presents I got a long time ago. 1914-D I picked up raw from a local dealer who I trust, but am curious as to the accuracy of his grading. He did say that he would make it right if it came back lower than he sold it for. The 1909-S I also bought raw. Now I just have to have some patience.

Just got my coins back and am a little disappointed. The double eagle got bodybagged for altered surfaces, and the 1909-S did as well for cleaning (I was figuring that one would but it was a freebie so I gave it a shot). The others came back with what I figured they would. So the double eagle is worth it's weight in gold, can I touch it with my bare hands now, lol.

Hi ericnh, PCGS is tough. I usually nail the grades before I send my coins in, but on occasion, I am wrong and I guess they were right. Who knows. I sent coins that they "body-bagged" backed to them that came back slabbed. Don't feel bad, like I said, they are very particular and they do not accept damaged coins. Wish they did. They would make tons more $$. I just sent an 1804 1/2C to ANACS that PCGS called "cleaned" that I thought for sure was not. I have been buying and selling coins for over 20 coins and am pretty confident in my grading. I used to believe in the grading services exclusively, but now, I am mainly using them for the long term protection of my rare coins. Take care.

It is interesting to read your plight. I plan to be in your shoes hopefully soon. I am a relative newbie and studying like crazy to make some intelligent choices for grading. I see you submitted 8 your first time out. Sounds like the PCGS Platinum sign-up deal which I also plan to use. I am pouring through my entire collection looking for the 8 coins I am going to submit first time out. So far I have 5 selected. As soon as I figure out the remaining 3 I am going to send them and I will post my experience in this forum as well. I was really nervous about making the wrong decision about which coins to send, but then I looked at it another way... I will be investing $200 in a membership and then some more for shipping both ways and insurance. Even if, in a worst case scenario, every single one came back in a body bag, I would be out less than $300. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I can just trash $300 if I feel like it. I am just saying that, once in a while, like most people, I do. On a night at the casino, on a day at a theme park...whatever. If I lose $250 dollars and in return I get - to enjoy the excitement and anticipation of my grades
- the learning experience
and
- even the slim chance that one of my coins will grade out a gem
Then I am OK taking the gamble. Plus once I am a member, I can take that gamble for about $30 dollars, one coin at a time. I have blown thirty dollars on some pretty stupid things in my life. How badly could it hurt my to blow in on a chance at thousands?

You may want to double check but I don't think there is a 5 coin minimum any longer on the updated 2008 PCGS submission form
