It's a War Nickel , 35% silver badly beat and worn . If the reverse lettering is not wear ,then it could have been a Grease Filled Die at time of striking . but I'm leaning towards badly worn .

It is possible the missing letters are from grease being in the die as it struck the coin - called a " Struck Through Grease" error.

It is hard to tell for sure in the pics, but the extra letters you see are also accompanied by a circular mark that might be where a coin was pressed/hit hard onto this one such that the letters of the top coin made an impression (as did the rim).

Or it could be as the top coin was hit it also was able to flatten the nickel's missing letters.

Wait for more opinions.

oops - edited to add that since I know nothing of your affiliation with the hobby, this is a War Nickel and has silver content. So its a good find in pocket change!

Looks like a grease-filled die. Great find, and great photos.
