Some part of an inheritence and some handed down to me. MOst of them were just found in a container piled in there.
WHat should I do with them? Should I go through these? Would any of them be worth collecting or should I just spend them? What dates should I be looking for?
THe only date I know thats valuable is is the 1945 tombac but obviously I'm not going to find that.

How old are the pennies? If you can find anything in the 1920-1936 in good shape with luster, you may be able to get money out of them. Any 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926 are worth holding onto. The 1923 and 1925 will fetch the most. As for nickels, look on this site There are certain varieties that fetch more money. Don't take the prices on that site, because usually you won't get near what's shown. But you will see that some varieties are relatively rarer than others. If you get a chance, post some pics. To start, you could post a picture of all the coins in 1 pic. That will help quickly filter what could be worth something and what won't be.

I did mean 1944 sorry.I better get started then lol. Lots to go through,I don't have all the dates down yet.
On the link that was posted for each year of coin at the bottom they have list for errors/varieties. WHats the difference betweeen an error and a variety? Are there some varities that are so common that if I find one I should disregard it? (maybe like a die clash)

Also is there dates that you suggest I disregard? Like anything post 1950 for example?

There's nickels going for a few hundred bucks if you find the right ones. The 2005 Speared buffalo is a nice error to find. Mid 80's nickels in MS condition are worth something since the strikes were notoriously bad in that era and there just aren't many good examples around. Also, the 2009 nickel was run in record low numbers (since 1955) due to the crash of '08 and are hard to find. I've gone through 5 huge stashes this week and am yet to come across a single '09.

If you take a heavy paper or cardboard, make measured checkerboard type lines and assign each block a date, it will really speed up the sorting process and it can be used over and over if you luck into more hoards.

an error is a mistake that happened at the mint. Like a clipped planchet, a double strike, off-centred strike, etc.
a variety is not a mistake. They used different dies to make coins for the same year. Sometimes these dies have slight differences, and through studying coins, people (and many members here on the CCF) have found these differences and attributed them and their rarity.

I enjoy looking at the old stuff, even if I don't find a gem. Wish I knew more about the Canadian coins to help you out. Hope you do find a special coin in the pile!

I would keep them all. Any nickle older than 1982 is pure nickel and worth more than face for melt value.
