A 66 year old coin is a pleasant surprise by itself. The S is certainly a bonus.

Off hand, I think without looking that there are Large S and small S 1951 S nickels and this looks like the more scarce Large S. I could be mistaken. It's been awhile since I poked around in Jeffersons. ( believe it or not ) nevermind ... it's the 1941 S I'm thinking about.

I like 'em with them big S's...don't take that wrong! But yea, the 40's had large and small S's on 1c, 5c, 10c I'm sure of. It is estimated that only 12% of the 1941S LWC's were the large cent variety.

I also really like finding S-mint's. It doesn't happen too often!

Nice find indeed. That is one of the nine semi-key date Jefferson with annual mintage of less than 10 million. The 1951-S checks in at #6 on the list with a mintage of 7.8 million.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art
