Hi,
Both the obverse and the reverse are showing the effects of die clashes.
Thanks, Bill

Help! I'm so glad I found people with 2008 pennies. I need a roll to give to some grads this weekend and no bank I called has rolls of new pennies. I have been successful in the past, but I'm not coming up with any this year. Please, any advice is welcome.
The only thing one bank offered is to come in and buy a box for $25.00 with no guarantee if there are new ones in there or not.
What should I do?
Thanks in advance, D.

That's a tough one and I can empathize with you. I live in the pacific NW and I have yet to see a 2008 D cent in circulation. If cents are important for you then there may be no way around it. You might try to use 2008 quarters as gifts. The States quarters should be easy to come by.
Otherwise, I would order the 25.00 box and see what happens.
Good Luck, Bill

I found four so far Bill and I've gone through close to 30 boxes this year. They were all in the same roll.
Denise: Your best bet is to find a bank that orders a LOT of coin and hope to get a box with 2008s in it. In my experience, the banks that handle merchants are the best bet in this case. I would also bribe a few tellers at some of these banks to keep an eye out for rolls of them for you. As far as I know there is no way for the bank branches or you to specifically order new pennies.

The areas to be affected by die clashes the most are where the fields and devices touch. The clash is just an outline of the action of the two dies clashing against each other without a planchet between them. Here is what affects the reverse areas you pictured.

Thank you Bill and SeattleMD.
I did go to the bank and buy a box for $25.00. I opened a few rolls and found around 10 '08s. I wanted brand new ones, but 'eh, I'll polish them up and put them on a card with the sentiment "A Penny for Luck".
Are you familiar with the writing? It speaks of Honest Abe and to be honest; Liberty, and not to waste the liberty we have, etc. If interested, I will send it to the forum.
I am not a collector but found it relaxing to look at the dates and remember what was important about that year. I will check out what you "found in rolls".
Thanks again, Denise

I disagree with the reverse being the result of a die clash. Looks more like a die crack that ended up chipping out.

BILL, quick question....... without disclosing too much on location for general public. Is the last two digits of your zip 26 or 25? I only ask this, since I live in the NW & someone keeps beating me to stashes of cents that come in to the local coin shops. Just like to know if maybe it's you......

Hi,
I still think it may be a misaligned die clash on both sides of the coin.
If the clash were perfectly straight, the clash marks above ERTY of LIBERTY would be at a perfect 90 degree angle in relation to LIBERTY. The marks are not, they are angled.
Chuck is probably right, but I need to play with it a little more to be sure:-)
Coop is an overlay genius:-) Maybe he can fiddle with some overlays by rotating the images to line up with the original pics in the thread.
Thanks, Bill

OK, Bill twisted my arm. LOL But I lined up the die clash obverse bays with the R on LIBERTY Reverse and they match. The clash is slightly off set from the normal one. The neck is usually in the third bay, now in the fourth. But I've been learning that not all die clashes fall exactly in the same spot. One example I've seen showed three different bars/bays on the obverse. They are not right on top of each other. But see what you think with the image provided?Click on image to enlarge it.

Coop, those overlays fascinate me! There are clash dis remnabts on both REV, and OBV. I agree that the OBV remnants seem to be slightly rotated CW. I have a box of 2008-D,, but haven't had time to look at them. Too many items on the "H-D" list, like fixing the water leaks under the house! The only missing from the bbox went "back East, shortly after buying them. Dick
