Hi There, I am looking for some information on how to tell the difference between real and fake Spanish Reales. I need some advice for mostly 1700s into the early 1800s Reales. Thanks Coin Picker!! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

One thing that we can be sure of is that a fake reale isn't really real, but a real reale really is real.

In my case it is very simple to tell them apart. Although I do not a lot of them, the genuine coins are silver and the fakes are not silver. So weight and composition can be good indicators.

Full disclosure: I have no financial interest in this book.
I will say that I consider books to be one of the essential tools of coin collecting. I supose that I look at it this way--if I have ten coins that I can identify or attribute with a $100 book, then the cost per coin is only ten bucks.

Write a book on a very concise topic that functions as the "must have" volume for that subject. Take all the photos, edit it all. Hire a printer.
You know it will most likely never sell more than a few hundred copies, so you stay with a small print run.
Now sell the book, even though it has almost no competition.
How long do you think it will take to get your money back, just for the printing and postage, even at over $100 a pop?
Consider the time spent learning and writing the book as no payback. You are doing it because you want to pass on your knowledge.
You will find $100+ to be cheap.

There are many very informative posts on this forum about counterfeit reales (typically 8 reales coins). I also recommend the book but if you can't afford it then just read every one of swamperbob's posts.

I'm certainly not trying to be insulting. I do realize the heightened costs of self-publishing and the countless hours of hard work and time put into the publication.
I apologize if my comment came off the wrong way.
