Any background or further identification would be appreciated. I understand it is an Almohads Dinar (1130-1269 AD). The picture is substantively reduced for posting here( following the picture is a link to my google drive where you can find the original image Original High resolution image can be downloaded( file is too large for previewing) via this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0...?usp=sharingEdited by austrokiwi 07/25/2017 1:04 pm

Nice coin, only thing I know about these were they struck in Spain by an Islamic dynasty.

Ancient gold, you're living the dream!
Not my field (Arabic stuff) and I wouldn't know where to start with it, but congratulations on what looks like an amazing piece.

It seems that most of us here in the CCF do not understand Islamic issues in detail.
That certainly includes me.
Nevertheless, I do have a few Islamic coins. At least one representative example of Islamic gold should be included in a small collection of them, if your budget allows. I have to get them professionally attributed, if I don't get them that way in the first place.
Stephen Album is one of the most respected dealers of Islamic material.

I agree with sel. I also have a few Islamic coins, but while they can be very beautiful they are very difficult to identify for me any way.

Quote: I believe it is an issue of Abu Muhammad `Abd al-Mu'min, 1130-1163. I tend to agree, but readily acknowledge that my Arabic is pretty suspect. The attribution should be Album #480. Here is some information in Album's checklist about the Almohads): Quote: Almohad gold is generally well-struck, often from exquisitely engraved dies, some of which are among the finest productions of medieval Islamic mints. Congrats on a super pick-up!

Does it have a specific AH date anywhere? I know that early Islamic silver coins were dated, but I don't know if that also applied to gold (and/or if it still was the case that late).

Thanks guys.... You have given me more to chase down about the coin. As far as I could tell all the script in the coin just has Islamic praises for god. I can't see a date on it anywhere. I went for this coin because of the relationship of the Almohads to the development of Europe and European coin. Their strict "rural" approach to Islam forced Christians and Jews out of Andalusia weakening the economy and opening up the door to the Christian north retaking the Islamic held lands. I do like late medieval gold and this coin is nice.... but I have to admit the Heavier gold coins of Europe ( florins, and Ducats) just have a little more charm. I think this is because the thicker European gold coins allowed for deeper/heavier strikes. I am still pleased with this purch ASE

Some old contacts identified the coin for me. I had trusted the seller ( auction house) and broken my own rules on checking before I buy. Its actually a half dinar of Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Mu'min struck in the Ceuta Mint. Today Ceuta is a Spanish Autonomous city at the top of north Africa( just above Morroco). I found it in Stephen Album as 478. I am still pleased with it
