The microscope photo seems to be in sharper focus, but much smaller.

The iPad version seems adequate. Could be sharper, but getting better lighting will be tricky. Between the two, I much prefer the microscope, but with some time and effort you might be able to get similar quality from the iPad.

C'mon - I have a "Plugable USB 2.0" from Amazon - 34.99$ I know a friend of mine has a "flexible" that is pretty much the same thing. just make sure it is compatible with the version installed on your computer. have a look - fun & easy to use

They look like two completely different coins. The iPad image is better because you can see the surface qualities better like the indentations and die flow lines between the letters and rim.

With good lighting you can get quality close-ups with a camera and loupe. 99.9% of the time microscopes are not needed for coins and many numismatists never use them.

Now please don't get cranky with me, as I'm not very technically minded, but perhaps one thing to consider is that with a Scope, you are tethered to your PC and therefore limited to where you can use it, but with the IPad, you're fully mobile.

I am tethered to my PC for piccies, and there are times when it's a real drawback. I don't have any type of mobile phone or similar piece of equipment, too old to learn new tricks.
