I have an uncirculated set from 1991, valued at around $20.
I would like to send it to a family member living in China.
On Canada Post's page about shipping to China, coins and banknotes are listed under "prohibited items." However, from what I know, one set of numismatic product for personal collection is tax-free.
Does anyone here have experience shipping coins to China from Canada?

I sold a $20 for 20 coin to a buyer from China. It was shipped by regular mail. Took forever but did get to the buyer without issues.

ShareBear,
Regular mail as in lettermail or regular parcel? Did you have to make a declaration?
(Currently, I am exempt from paying taxes of either side because the value of the coin is pretty insignificant, just like your 20 for 20 coin).

I it somehow surprising to see stuff being shipped to China. A high % of all the merchandise here in Canada comes from there. I would like to see the trade balance between the 2 countries. Your $20 will help close the gap. Joke apart, if you ship in a regular envelope and not a parcel, you should not have to fill any paperwork and just have to pay regular postage.

cdcoinman,
You would be surprised at how many RCM products they have at the coin markets in China. While there may not be a market for circulation coinage, the commemoratives are definitely out there. One time I went there, a relative gave me the Year of the Horse silver coin. Another time, it was something from the Perth Mint. Importing merchandise in large volumes will lead to taxes, but I think most of the time, Chinese tourists are the ones who tend to bring these things to China and start circulating them on the market.

Petersun:

It was shipped by regular mail. It was the coin in the flip only and not the folder. I put it in a regular sized but extra thick envelope. Figured a green customs label was like a giant steal me sign.

I have shipped a few dozen items to China. About 90% make it vs. 99%+ in North America.

Just had one ebay case today actually....I shipped an item in May, the buyer filed a case for non-delivery and got a refund in July,.....then told me today it just arrived. About 90 days delivery for a simple letter (just a single piece of paper money in the envelope).

I am willing to put up with the losses on shipments to China because the sale tend to be on items that no one else is likely to buy.....
