Hello all I was roll searching when I found this 1971 penny with both an S and P mint mark. The S is my prominent but there is also a P in the background almost not fully stamped. What could have caused this?

@techonaut, that is kinda interesting. As you likely know, there have been examples where coins have one mintmark engraved over another on the die, but it doesn't look like that is what happened here. Rather, I think you just have a somewhat P-shaped scratch there.

It is a 1971S, I do not see anything resembling a P. 2017 is the only year cents have had a P mintmark.

I thought it also could be a scratch but there aren't any other dings or dents on the coin. Also the year and S mint mark are unharmed. To the naked eye it looks exactly like a Philadelphia mint mark. And yes I know the Philadelphia mint did not put marks on there penny's in the 70's but they did on other coins. Either way this should have been minted in San Francisco so I'm dumbfounded as to how this got here. If you guys would like more pics just ask.

to the Community. I agree with above on your P MM.I am more anxious to see a close up of the S MintMark, it looks interesting enough to examine closely!

@chase007 do you by any chance have a recommendation on a good microscope camera?

It's impossible to have a P mintmark on a San Francisco cent. Only year they have the P mintmark is 2017 and that's only a 1 year design.

To CCF , trust us , there's no P next to the S . Does not even have the slightest bit of resemblance of a P mint mark .

Highly unlikely because the last time the Mint used a small P mintmark on coins was back in the 1940's. Not likely the punch would still be around 30 years later, especially after the Philadelphia mint changed locations in 1969.
