Good evening went out metal detecting this morning and pulled a 1864 IHP and it looks like it could be the (L) variety of this penny what does everyone think do you all think I'm seeing things ? And if it is the (L) does this have any kind of value being that I pulled it from the ground.

Thanks for everyone's input

I think it is an "L", based on the left part of the base. I also think I see something under the ribbon that could conceivably be a letter. Try turning the coin a bit counter-clockwise as you examine it with a loupe. There are many very knowledgeable people here who I'm sure will weigh in.

Do you see that the letter is turned?

Clearly an 1864 L in need of Verdi Care

Agreed...Pointed Bust is the pick-up-point even in poor condition...the "L" is also very visible on your coin.

Incredible ground find . With proper conservation could fetch a pretty penny ( no pun intended ).

What would be proper conservation? How would I go about that I don't want it to get any worse.

Buy and use some Verdi-Care, if don't already have some. That'll help get rid of the green gunk on the coin. Then put it into at least a cardboard flip, or an airtite if you have any.
Rest in Peace

Amazingly nice for a dug coin. I'd let it soak in pure acetone for a bit to loosen some of the debris. Then a pure water rinse. The Verdi Care if the debris hasn't loosened considerably.

You might also consider having it professionally restored by NGC, and they could grade it afterwards.

Congratulations on a marvelous recovery.

Not much you can do for a greenie . I've tried everything. You either love it the way it is or try and get rid of it. Not a huge loss as the rims were eaten up.
