Hello -

I'm new and actually writing for a friend who has come upon some rough times. Her father has left her a number of gold coins (which I believe were purchased through one of the TV coin shows), and she is considering selling some.

i have looked the coins up on ebay to get an idea of what they are selling for but ebay is not the ideal forum for her to liquidate her collection in a 'timely' manner.

which brings me to the reason for my post...can anyone provide some pointers as to the best way she might go about selling her coins? are there websites that buy coins from individuals? Would she take a beating (price-wise) if she went that route? are sites like yours a better venue? Or should she just take them to a local coin shop? Is it better to sell them individually or as a collection?

to give you an idea of the type of coins she has, they are generally ms61 $10 gold pieces from 1881 - 1922 (not all years). she also has some ms69 2000 - 2003 'eagle' coins from $5 to $50.

any and all information is greatly appreciated. neither of us knows anything at all about coins, and I certainly don't want to give her bad advice.

thanks very much!

clowder

(I realize we can't use this site until we've met the number of posts requirement, but I'm hoping to at least get some info I can pass along to her)

Before you get other answers

You mentioned the coins were
ms61 $10 gold pieces from 1881 - 1922 (not all years). and ms69 2000 - 2003 'eagle' coins from $5 to $50.
the important question is who graded these coins MS61 & MS 69

depending on who graded them will effect the price she will realize on them.

If they were bought from a television source it is likely you overpaid and it will be difficult to sell the coins for what was paid for them.

Once you have all the information on the coins
Your first step.

Then you can approach a local coin dealer (shop) and get their opinion.

If you continue to post you will have an opportunity here, however if this thread starts looking like the coins are being put up for sale here before time than the thread will be pulled.

In the meantime once you have found out more information about the coins we will be able to help you find a place to sell them.

As far as coin shops go...Take them to get estimates and grade opinions but don't sell them immediately. They are buying to make a profit so they sometimes won't give you as much as you could get elsewhere.

One option is ebay but if you are a first time seller it might be difficult with higher dollar coins.

Third option is to sell them on consignment. There are members here that can sell them on ebay or elsewhere for you.

We love pictures so please feel free to post some pics or scans of the coins to better help us give you a value of the coins

It looks like you have coins that might have some numismatic value. Anything old could be worth more than the gold value. You need to do some research to find out if there are any rare dates before you sell those. ebay is a good place to start, but you also need to look at the RedBook to determine rarities.

The modern coins are more than likely just worth bullion value, & would be the ones I would consider selling first. If you have looked thewm up on ebay you should have a idea of retail values on these. Armed with that knowledge you can take them to local dealers & get offers. There are also online dealers that are reputable that may offer a better price. A search of the coins wanted forum should turn up a fairly recent thread that had a reputable dealer in it.

thank you all for your helpful answers.

i have a feeling that the coins were probably graded by joes fly by night coin company or some such. all I have is a written list of information she gave me - do the initials PGGS and PCGS mean anything?

how does one go about getting a REPUTABLE grading for coins? and what ARE the reputable grading organizations?

PCGS stands for Professional Coin Grading Service. It's one of the two biggest ones ANACS being the other. You should be able to trust the grades that have been assigned to the coins graded.

I have never heard of PGGS and couldn't come up with anything in a google search. Perhaps the label was misread and it's another PCGS graded coin. I believe they underwent a packaging change at some point.

PCGS is one of the biggest and you can trust their grades. Everyone reputable will honor and respect those grades.......they are what they are with no doubt then !!
That'll be very helpful in trying to sell them.
Places to sell.....hummmm....You could take pictures of them and try it on places like this forum.....but ebay, despite your misgivings might be the best place. A coin shop would certainly buy them from you and that would be easiest, but you know that they won't give you a "top dollar" for ANY coins.....because they have to "re-sale" them for a profit.....
Why does your friend have to sell them?....Would she consider keeping them to pass down to her children as "Grandpa's coins" ?...Perfectly understandable if she needs the money though, it's a tough world out there !...just a thought though.

My suggestion is to take your time, learn as much about those coins as possible prior to attempting to sell. This forum is a great place to learn quickly about what those coins are or could be. Keep posting and soon enough you'll have enough posts to warrant the ability to sell here. Here you would be dealing with basically honest, coin collectors and dealers that should give you the best deal possible. Having someone rant and rave against a member would not be to much of a benifit for anyone so we here are a little safer to deal with. Maybe. Naturally there is always someone like me though.
ebay as noted is probably the best place for the best deals. However, with so many bad episodes I'd be afraid I be one of them.
