I found this penny in a box my dad gave me, looks super strange, not scratch marks. Thoughts of what this is? My dad wrapped this up for some reason in cardboard. (He pass away so I cannot ask him) Any thoughts of what this could be?

Hard to tell from that photo but the marks appear to be marks and damage. If you can provide a better photo, taken without the plastic over the coin, we might be able to tell more.

I think it's a Hobo cent. Looks like the design has been reworked. A close-up would be helpful.

Yes, it does look like some kind of antler. I do not intend any insult here -- but just to be sure, are you certain that it's not on the plastic covering the coin. It could be on the inside side of the plastic. I think you're going to need to remove it from its holder at some point. It is possible that it is just glue or something. It is an interesting pattern....and I am curious about it.

This is about as close as I can get with my phone. It is engraved or impressed somehow. No glue or plastic

Thanks for checking the plastic. So...I think it was probably struck through some bit of wire or string... Here's some information on it: http://www.error-ref.com/?s=struck&...hrough+ Scroll down to the last pics. Meanwhile, there are some experts here who should know for sure.

@jjoca, first welcome to CCF. That is an interesting coin that you have posted.
I'm no expert, but @buddy, I'm with your first post--this looks to me like a clear adhesive or glue has stuck to the coin. If the coin was soaked in acetone, this might lift off the adhesive without damaging the coin.

The dark marks are spotting/environmental damage. The impression does look to be moose or reindeer antlers. My guess is it is a counter stamp of some sort. If my computer hadn't died I'd post some stamped LMC's with US states, a Liberty Bell and of course the strange but true cardsvof Kennedy facing Lincoln. Maybe your coin had something to do with Christmas?

It's definitely interesting. Hopefully Coop will weigh in on it.

to the forum, My inclination would also be some kind of an adhesive substance ,note how the devices and Abe's Eye below the effected area are sharp and undisturbed! How about giving it an Acetone bath and see what happens!

It's either glue or a struck through error. I'm guessing the former. It might also be PMI

Looks like glue. PMD. I agree with others to use Acetone.

I'm undecided but, it is definitely interesting looking! The first step for me would be a long soak in pure acetone (paint section) in case it is adhesive of some sort. Pending results of that, we could consider a struck-through debris scenario. I think the "antler" look is coincidence.
