Hi Guys

I'm not into collecting mint errors but I do have a few coins. Not even sure that they are minting errors.

The planchet used to mint the 2 Rand coin is smaller than the normal 2 Rand and bigger than the 1 Rand.

The letters on your top image appear recessed, so it may be a vise job not an error. How does the edge on your second coin look?

@Fuzzy317

Will take pics of the edge of the 2 Rand coin. Edge still covered with nickel. Also thought someone used a grinder or some tool to "create" the error. But then the copper should show. Will post pics of the edge later during the day.

PS the 2 Rand planchet also much thinner than the normal 2 Rand.

in addition they are mirror images, a dead giveaway for a vise job. PMD for that one for certain.

I disagree with Nevol. The South Africa 2 cent coin looks like a legitimate offcenter brockage error coin. It was struck while the collar die was engaged, which is hard to replicate with a vise job. The error portion is an incuse mirror image, since another coin got in between the dies when it was struck. On the obverse, behind the error area, it is harder struck than the rest of the coin, because of an increased minting pressure (due to the intervening coin) - whereas a viced coin would be weak in that area.

It is definitely a partial brockage, not a vise job.

On the 2 Rand coin, does South Africa mint coins for any other African countries?

Hi Guys, sorry for the delay with regard to the photo.

Attached the edge of the normal and "mint error" at 9 o'clock anf 3 o'clock respectively

Thank you all for your opinions, appreciated.

SA Mint does mint other African coins.

@boikemist6

Your question triggered my last few brain cells ... not the answer but just as info, the 2 Rand and the Namibian 10 cent are almost exactly the same diameter (21.5mm) and thickness (1.3mm). That said, the first Namibian 10 cent was only minted in 1993 (Finnish Mint).

The Zimbabwe 1990 10 cent, diameter (19.98mm) and thickness (1.54mm) was minted according to Numista by The Royal Mint.

Still searching ... will compare the coin with Botswana 10 Thebe ...
