From Wikipedia: "Maurice (Latin: Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus...(539 - 27 November 602) was Eastern Roman Emperor from 582 to 602. A prominent general in his youth, Maurice fought with success against the Sassanid Persians. Once he became Emperor, he brought the war with Sasanian Persia to a victorious conclusion: the Empire's eastern border in the Caucasus was vastly expanded and for the first time in nearly two centuries the Romans were no longer obliged to pay the Persians thousands of pounds of gold annually for peace. Maurice campaigned extensively in the Balkans against the Avars - pushing them back across the Danube by 599. He also conducted campaigns across the Danube, the first Roman Emperor to do so in over two centuries. In the West, he established two large semi-autonomous provinces called exarchates, ruled by exarchs, or viceroys, of the emperor. In Italy, Maurice established the Exarchate of Ravenna in 584, the first real effort by the Empire to halt the advance of the Lombards. With the creation of the Exarchate of Africa in 590, he further solidified the power of Constantinople in the western Mediterranean. His reign was troubled by financial difficulties and almost constant warfare. In 602, a dissatisfied general named Phocas usurped the throne, having Maurice and his six sons executed. This event would prove cataclysmic for the Empire, sparking a twenty-six year war with Sassanid Persia which would leave both empires devastated prior to the Muslim conquests. His reign is a relatively accurately documented era of Late Antiquity, in particular by the historian Theophylact Simocatta. The Strategikon, a manual of war which influenced European and Middle Eastern military traditions for well over a millennium, is traditionally attributed to Maurice." I just received confirmation that I won this solidus of Maurice in Frank Robinson's latest auction. It will make a great addition to my historical figures collection, and is my fourth gold Byzantine coin. I really like these and might go after a few more really soon. I really like the obverse of this coin. the portrait is well detailed. Please post your coins of Maurice, Byzantine gold coins, or any Byzantine coins at all. I was a bit too late to post this in the "Walking back in time" thread. Edited by orfew 08/18/2017 12:42 pm

Sorry @echizento, the only thing I have is the SB number. It is 478. I will know much more once I measure it and weigh it. Unfortunately this information was not included in the listing.

Lovely coin, Andrew. Congrats on the auction win! I need to confirm this with Frank, but based upon the results list it looks like I snagged a late Parthian tet (lot 124) in the auction...definitely a modest coin, with some flaws, but I'll be happy to own it, and at a very good price. I have no Byzantines to add to this thread, unfortunately. My only-ever Byzantine, a Justinian follis, was gifted to the son of a friend years ago.

Super coin! I briefly owned a Maurice half-follis. Sold it a few months ago in a mass purge of lot bycatch.

Well since you said "Any Byzantine coins at all" I will post one from a bit later on a Leo the Wise coin, my other two Byzantines were posted on the walking back thread... I am not sure that that patina is natural, it was only after buying this that I became aware that some sellers apply things to make the coin contrast. In truth I prefer the kind of greenish finish of Ron's which my Justin and Sophie follis shares.

Justin II Gold Solidus - 4.41g, 20mm Justin II (Latin: Flavius Iustinus Iunior Augustus); c. 520 - 5 October 578) was Eastern Roman Emperor from 565 to 574. He was the husband of Sophia, nephew of Justinian I and the Empress Theodora, and was therefore a member of the Justinian Dynasty. His reign is marked by war with the Sassanid Empire and the loss of the greater part of Italy. He presented the Cross of Justin II to Saint Peter's, Rome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_II
